Richard Clarke, Special Advisor to the President on Cyberspace Security 5/16/02:

America's Cyberspace Security Leader Talks Strategy

Cyberspace is filled with a myriad of targets for the terrorists. We are not talking about the Taliban. We are talking about the hackers, who could be living or working anywhere. Likely targets of the hackers include our nations electrical grids, our financial markets, air traffic control and public transportation not to mention the nation's communication networks.

Mr. Richard Clark, Special Advisor to the President on Cyberspace Security as well as Chairman of the President's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board was our w3w3 Talk Radio Show guest, just hours before addressing an interested crowd at the Boettcher Auditorium, University of Denver.

At 7:00pm sharp, the Town Hall Meeting on Cyber Security started. It was moderated by Sheriff Patrick J. Sullivan, Jr., Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department. The sheriff by the way, is one of Colorado's best kept secrets as he is considered a national expert on this topic.

Washington, DC - May 8, 2002 -
The White House announces a series of town hall meetings sponsored by the President's Critical Infrastructure Protection Board and hosted by Richard Clarke, Special Advisor to the President for Cyberspace Security.
May 16, 2002 -Denver Colorado was the first in this series.

The panel left to right: Mr. Richard Clarke, Special Advisor to the President on Cyberspace Security; Mr. John Tritak, Director, Critical Infrastructure Assurance Office, U.S. Dept. of Commerce; Mr. Joe Nacchio, President and CEO, Qwest; Lt. General Ed Anderson, Deputy Commander, U.S. Space Command; Ms. Valerie McNevin, Colorado State Chief Information Security/Information Privacy Officer

These experts were here to help educate and to make us aware as well as to listen. A greater part of their mission was to involve us in the development of the national strategy. This is the first time in our history that every individual and company has a role in this important issue - national cyberspace security.

Sheriff Patrick J. Sullivan, Jr., Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office
Nationally known leader, Sheriff Sullivan moderated the Town Hall Meeting. His organization, Infragard Chapter Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office

John Tritak, Director of the U.S. Critical Infrastructure Assurance Office - Letting the audience know that the government can't do it all... In fact, business, industry and the people can do it more effectively, after all, who's going to take it in the neck if a hacker attacks your business? Turn your computer off at night, don't stay online if you're not working online, and teach your children to be safe and secure online.

Joe Nacchio, CEO of Qwest Communications
There are laws that must be changed. (Example: The Freedom of Information Act) Joe explained he can't tell these gentlemen how he runs his business because they are obliged to reveal that information to 3rd party interests under the "act" and that can impact everyone negatively! We need the ability to discuss solutions freely without fear of revealing secrets to our competitors or worse to our enemies.

Lt. General Ed Anderson
, Deputy Commander of the U.S. Space Command: Stressing the importance of Cyber security, he pointed out that 95% of the information the military transports is on the Internet.

Valerie McNevin
, Colorado State Chief Information Privacy/Information Security Officer: Sharing insights as to how the large companies face many of the same challenges as small companies and individuals.

Kenneth Watson, Cisco Systems, and president of the PCIS.

Larry Nelson, Producer, w3w3.com Internet Talk Radio and
Joe Nacchio, CEO of Qwest Communications
"We don't think it's funny when a 14 year old hacks into..." and now we are all so much more aware of threat, the incredible losses, and we know too that we have a responsibility and a duty in this privileged nation to monitor cyberspace safety and privacy/security practices.

Betty Pierce
, President of Secure Network Systems (SNS), Richard Clarke, Tiffany Olson (Assistant to Richard Clarke), and Melanie Hernoud, CEO & CSO of SNS, exchange some thoughts.
A big problem faced by security experts is, no one has the time or money to execute the security solutions until they've been hacked, this is true in small business as well as large corporations.
