David Cohen, Chairman/Founder, TechStars Accelerating the global eco system
enclosure-voice 1711_ 4/20/15 - Seven years ago, Larry interviewed David Cohen and his partner, David Brown. They had a very unique idea, the question in our minds was, would it work? Today we're talking with David Cohen, Founder/Chairman, TechStars and he said, "Well, in 20 years we'll know. We've got 13 more to go. It seems like it's working, but with venture capital you never know." Ah, but we know they're doing fantastic and growing all the time. TechStars has built a great team. David says, "That's one of the things I'm most proud of. We're up to about 70 people now. People, people, people. That's what makes any startup work, and I think that's what makes TechStars work. It's an honor to work with so many amazing people across the world. Today we're running 18 different accelerator programs a year. So the footprint is pretty extensive now, all across America, in Berlin and London... starting to expand internationally. We think there is a lot of opportunity there." High Rising - Second Stage Companies
Colorado Companies to Watch 2015 Winners Gala Event - June 5th enclosure-voice 1718_ 5/4/15 - "About 900 people will be attending the CCTW Gala Awards Dinner, coming June 5th. It is the ‘who’s who of Colorado’ and if you register by May 15th you will save $50 per ticket. So save some money and register early" points out Melodie Reagan, CCTW Legacy Committee.
Colorado Companies to Watch (CCTW) takes the usual awards program and sets it free. Start with every influential player in the business community — forward-thinking government agencies, dedicated private enterprises and their professionals, progressive not-for-profits and influential community leaders. Then canvas the entire state for companies that are quietly creating jobs, developing innovation and contributing to their communities. Put them through a proven application and selection process, and voila. Cue your goose bumps.
Colorado Companies to Watch is a unique statewide awards program recognizing growing companies that fuel the economic fire of the state. The Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade launched the program in 2009 in conjunction with the Edward Lowe Foundation and valuable sponsors, key drivers, community and supporting partners, and volunteers from throughout the state of Colorado. The Edward Lowe Foundation continues to serve as an advisor to the program.
At the heart of Colorado Companies to Watch, is an awards program to honor second-stage companies for the critical role they play in our state and community economies. These companies are often flying under the radar of recognition. CCTW‘s collaborative model is also a powerful vehicle to energize Colorado’s entrepreneurial community.
Find out about CCTW’s Gala Award Dinner, it’s on June 5th at the Hyatt Regency at the Colorado Convention Center, and that’s where we’re going to be announcing our 50 winners. Be sure to look for the July/August issue of the CObiz magazine, they will have detailed profiles on all of our winners.

Ron McKey, FlyingBeds International, Inc. Technology and the hottest new Murphy Bed in the world
enclosure-voice 1720_ 5/4/15 - Ron McKey, Founder and President of FlyingBeds International, Inc., is fired up about the new Italian Murphy Bed systems from Italy. Just introduced two weeks ago at the Milan show, [after a year of testing], this is the hottest new Murphy Bed in the world. That is a free standing Murphy Bed that does not attach to the floor or wall !
The Colombo Family, Francesco and Lino have continually improved and invented unique Murphy Bed styles with a guiding emphasis to manufacturing the most compact Murphy Bed system in the world. Most models store away into only 11” of wall space depth.
In only 11” this Italian family has made a steel framed platform that has a unique wood-slat foundation supporting your choice of mattress. A firm High Density Urethane Foam or the popular Memory Foam composition. You will not be sacrificing any impression of comfort in thinking this 6" mattress is less than the 13" mattress we have grown to accept as the American standard. The secret is the ‘foundation’ of this sleep system – it’s not built into the mattress, but built into the wood slat, steel framed foundation. Same comfort, different principle of achieving it. You’ll have to visit Ron’s site, FlyingBeds.com or ItalianMurphyBeds.com, to download your copy of this great catalog. Or better yet, give Ron a call and he’ll send a hard copy to you. This is great news for those overflow visitors up in Aspen – finally a comfortable evening’s sleep!

Brad Feld fingerprints all over, a huge champion
David Cohen, Chairman/Founder, TechStarsenclosure-voice 1714_ 4/27/15 - "We take a little bit of common stock in each company, so we're actually investing. And then we have venture funds so we're managing around $280 million of venture capital around the TechStars system so we can certainly follow on with the most promising companies. The way we use that venture capital is we co-invest alongside the community. So if a company goes to the accelerator, after they've gotten the $120 K from us, let's say they're going to raise a million or two. We might chip into that, a few hundred thousand of that out of our funds. If they go on to raise tens of millions, we might be a million or two of that. Right, so we're co-investment capital, helping these companies grow alongside the rest of the community. Brad Feld has been a huge part of that, he's one of the original founders though he's never been active in the business, but he is a huge champion for what we do and his fingerprints are all over what we do. He's been a tremendous mentor to me in terms of the venture fund, as have all of the guys at Foundry Group…"

Ned McClain, CEO, Applied TrustUsing a framework called
Secure Dev Ops

enclosure-voice 1710_ 4/20/15 - Going back a number of years when we heard about security threats, few understood the consequence, many thought it was just a sales pitch… But we've all learned it's much more - Effective security is a life saver. Applied Trust solves hard IT problems and they do that Trent Hein, CEO, Applied Trustusing a framework called 'Secure Dev Ops'. At the highest level Secure Dev Ops is at least two things. The unification of development and operations. Those two parts of a traditional IT organization - we add the third leg, security. Often times we say security has been the pariah of IT, tucked off in a corner in its own little department - and maybe a little bit of conflict between the rest of the business. The reality is we are in a space where we have to bring those together in an extraordinarily integrated way. Today we can apply the dev ops principles to any business, no matter what size - if they use software this helps - and is relevant from the startup to the SMB to the enterprise... Listen for more...

Gary Seaber, CEO/Founder, IT Liquidators When you recycle there's a lot of power and energy involved
enclosure-voice 1712_ 4/20/15 - Here at C-Level @ A Mile High 2015, we are running into so many industry leaders. It's a super exciting event. We've snatched Gary Seaber, CEO/Founder of IT Liquidators for a little chat. We asked Gary to tell our listeners about IT Liquidators. "We've been in business for 12 years this June. We buy excess technology from companies that are in transition. So as they upgrade to new equipment or downsize, whether they merge or consolidate. We're actually interested in buying from companies, their older technology. We bring that older equipment into our refurbishment center in Denver, upgrade and resell it online. We want to help companies create a sustainable model of reuse instead of just sending it to a recycler who charges you 35-cents a pound to take it away, I want to pay them for their remarket-able equipment. We also insure that any data left on that equipment is wiped to DOD standards, and...
