Neal Cohen, Partner, Holme Roberts & Owen, Boulderenclosure-voice 1015_ 5/16/11 - It isn't often that we get to share the personal character of an interview but we've decided this was the time to do so. After all that is what w3w3 aims to do, connect people and resources. Neal Cohen a partner at Holme Roberts and Owen - Boulder, is a delightful guy with a great sense of humor and a fun story. Neal grew up in Queens, New York, attended public school and one of the activities he got involved in was fencing, even before high school. He fenced in high school, the public school athletic league, went on to college and got a scholarship to fence in college, and then fenced after college until he was almost 30 years old. All of that predated his legal aspirations. Larry asked for more background. Neal went on, "Well fencing, as you can imagine, does not go a long way to paying many bills. So I had a lot of jobs to support my fencing habit." After college, Neal was a high school English teacher (which also didn't pay very well back then). He was a health club manager and he was a New York City cab driver. (Imagine, a cab driver that speaks English and knows his way around town!). "Which”, Neal said, “oddly enough, was the best paying job of the three, but had its own little challenges. It didn't hurt to have a foil in the front seat...in some circumstances." Larry said, "Mark Weakly mentioned you are a magnificent litigator. Would you mind getting into some of the litigation issues?" Neal told us,when he started out, the firm he was with did a lot of 'securities litigation'. "That", said Neal, "is sort of how I cut my teeth, in securities litigation." Most attorneys don't stay in one area their whole career and so Neal grew into doing 'employment litigation' and employment litigation invariably leads into 'trade secret litigation' because employees will change employers and take trade secrets with them, sometimes. They're not supposed to, of course, and that always leads to 'trade secret litigation', which is one of the areas of 'intellectual property'. Trade secret litigation took Neal into patent litigation and that lead to copyright litigation and other areas like that. This led to Neal's sub-specialty, patent litigation and he's been doing that for fifteen years. "When I was in law school, I met a cute girl who was sitting near me.. .Listen, there's much more...

Golf Classic for the Good of the Community
Rich Liner, The Liner Group - Passion = KidsTekPat Maley,Wiegers Capital Partners,  KidsTekenclosure-voice 1013_ 5/16/11 - Time for the always great KidsTek Charity Golf Classic - June 9th. This is the 10th Annual and w3w3 is excited to speak with good friends Rich Liner and Pat Maley, founding members of KidsTek. We met back in 2000 thru Cathy Ewing, then president of CSIA and both Rich and Pat were CSIA board members. KidsTek provides cost-effective tuition-free after-school computer education programs to Colorado's disadvantaged youth. Working in partnership with urban public schools and utilizing existing computer labs, KidsTek classes give students, from elementary to high school, the tools they need to succeed in modern life. KidsTek uses standards and project-based lessons that teach "real world" computer skills using the power of the Internet, the most commonly-used productivity software, and multimedia applications that engage students. Programs range from internet basics for elementary level children to a Cisco Networking Academy at Montbello High School in Denver. Thanks to your support, 900 students were served during the 2009-2010 school year. KidsTek continues to expand programs, and will host technology and computer skills classes at 14 sites this school year. We start out with a little recap of who KidsTek is. Rich tells us, "We are primarily chartered with helping under privileged and under served youth in the k-12 space throughout the front range in Colorado, providing cost-effective tuition-free after-school computer education programs to Colorado's disadvantaged youth. Right now we are working with 14 schools in Denver and Aurora public school systems, primarily through after school programs. We're now doing about 170 project based learning programs for the elementary and middle school kids. In the elementary schools we teach the kids to have fun with computers, how to safely use the Internet and get excited about using the technology. Then at middle school we teach them the skills they'll need to get ahead in life such as the Microsoft Office Suite, PowerPoint, Word and Excel, primarily. Pat Maley tells Larry, "What we're really trying to do is help high-schoolers develop technical skills that are immediately employable after high school or help them get into a technical program in college. And we're using industry training, so we use the same training that CISCO uses in their academy and the same with Solaris. We have two high schools in Denver, North High School and Montbello High School where we have CISCO classes where the kids actually take the class during the school day and at the end of the year they take the same certification that people take in industry.
    Larry asked Rich about coming events. "My favorite topic is the Annual Charity Golf Classic" said Rich, "which is coming up this year on June 9th with a silent auction and for a keynote speaker we have Dr. Nate Easley who is the president of the Denver School Board and a big proponent of reforming schools and making them better, doing whatever needs to be done to get these kids better schooled and that's why we are really excited about having him as our keynote this year. LinkScape gives us a link graph of the web it's not a full search engine. Now we are taking a look at the social graph... the noise from Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Yahoo Answers, Cora, just thousands of social media sites show up in the Search Engine Results Pages known as SERP. That's what's new at SEOmoz, we're looking at the social signals and incorporating them into our platform. Gillian had a very interesting take on entrepreneurs, "It is a hereditary disease, not a profession. Entrepreneurship is something you have to want and you have to want it so desperately that you are willing to walk through what I call the dip. So understanding entrepreneurship is: Have a great idea. You decide you want to bring it to the marketplace. But you must walk through this chasm of impediments to success. And, sometimes it gets very, very dark. It is not just that you need financial qualifications... there is much more! enclosure-voice 1008_ 5/2/11 - We are here at Rocky Mountain Lyons Eye Institute to talk with Dr. Malik Kahook, an associate professor of ophthalmology, and Naresh Mandava M.D., Professor and Chair of the Department of Ophthalmology, Inventors of the Year, Anschutz Medical Campus awarded by the University Colorado Tech Transfer Office. Malik said, "The award that we received recently centered around work that we are doing jointly using a base polymer for devices that are surgically implanted or injected into the eye to either induce changes that would improve a disease process or introduce medications into the eye that would treat the disease process over time. So a depot of medication, if you will, using a polymer based system." Naresh pointed out, "The exciting thing about the technology is that it's applicable to so many diseases such as glaucoma, macular degeneration, potentially even common things like cataracts. So we're very excited that these polymers that haven't had a place in ophthalmology will have place in treating these troubling diseases. They also have an active collaboration with members in the Department of Bio Engineering. Larry asked, "What advice would you give to researchers and scientists in this coming year or two? Malik, "Growing up, I always got the advice from my mother; In order to be successful you've got to surround yourself with good people. The idea for research, being the baby of the clinicians and scientists is something we should look after with similar advice - Surround your idea with good people. So the No. 1 advice I'd like to offer is, Surround any idea with the right team members and that's going to guarantee success." Naresh, "My advice is along the same lines. I think collaboration is key. I think being passionate about what you're researching is key. Malik and I are fortunate in what we do is taking care of patients every day, we know where the holes are in terms of traditional modalities of treatment we have for diseases like glaucoma and macular degeneration and really we are very passionate about what we do. You have to be driven, have a goal in mind and don't be afraid to fail." Listen, there's much more.....

Because they are unaware of how to protect their personal assets or what benefits are available and how to apply for them, families risk losing much, sometimes all, of what they’ve worked so hard to accumulate. Larry discussed this program with Chris Pelley, Managing Director of CIMCO and his guest Michael Meurer of Meurer Law Offices. Chris' friend at CIMCO Kansas City, explained that Elder Care was a pro bono, free service with a call center in St. Louis, with a number of experts in this wide range of Medicaid, Medicare, Veteran's Benefits, that very few people know about and that it is provided for the community at large. It occurred to Chris that looked a lot like Social Entrepreneurship (as we all know, Chris' great passion). So he listened and he learned that it could in fact help many people in the Rocky Mountain region in terms of addressing the problems for their elderly parents. That's the service and now we are going to help promote that program here.   Bernthal; Brad Feld and Jill Van Matre 1016_ 5/16/11 - This is part 3 of Brad Feld's saga,
Jill Van Matre, Associate Director of ATLAS, co-moderates this last Entrepreneurs Unplugged event for Spring 2011 with Brad Bernthal who is a clinical law professor at the law school and Director of the Silicon Flatirons Center Entrepreneurship Initiative, interviewed Brad Feld panel style. Brad started out, "When I was in school, remember I had been tutoring... as a freshman, MIT had this program called UROP, Undergraduate Research Opportunities Program, and basically you can get jobs in research labs. I was in computer science and got a job in Seymour Papert's lab, the guy who created the Logo programming language. I spent a semester helping to put the logo language on a new computer coming out. When I say that, I was kind of the junior grunt on the team that was making sure that things kind of worked. And it was alright, but it paid $6/hr, not quite like my tutoring job. So, somehow, I started doing some consulting, spread sheet stuff... The path to starting my own business was, my senior year in high school I got a job, after tutoring, I got a job working for TechCom. This was an oil and gas software company in Dallas Texas in 1982, husband and wife team. I was their first employee. They grew in 83-84 to about 30 people. I wrote two of their products and got paid $10/hr and I got 5% of gross revenue. While I was a freshman in college, I was regularly getting checks for $5,000 to $10,000 a month." Challenges, Choices and Opportunities for Companies
Chris Pelley, Managing Partner, CIMCO Denver, Boulder enclosure-voice 1014_ 5/16/11 - We are with Chris Pelley; of course Chris captured our attention years ago. He is very active in the community, he's on the board for ACG, and passionate about social entrepreneurship and involved in many outreach projects and programs. He also is Managing Partner of Capital Investment Management Company (CIMCO) an independent financial advisory firm that specializes in wealth management, retirement planning, portfolio management and business transition planning. Having a good bead on the economic environment, Larry asked, "What are the biggest challenges companies face today?" Chris' humble reply, "That might be an easy one because I've heard it from so many people far brighter than I. But it really distills down to one word, uncertainty." Chris points out that we got a bit of a respite from Congress on the tax situation. But if indeed Adam Smith was correct that the wealth of the nation is its people at work, then we need to improve upon employment - most of that will come from small and middle market companies. In fact 65% plus. Whereas in France 15% of the jobs come from small companies. So how do we work together to bridge the uncertainty around tax policy? The cost of healthcare? And even the regulatory environment? Today in Washington DC there's some debate about cutting expenses and/or raising revenue. What about growing the economy? If we grow from a $10 Trillion economy, which we had in the year 2000, to a $14 Trillion economy which we had in 2008... If we can have a 3% growth rate that will more than generate the revenue we need at current tax rates, I believe. That's just my opinion. To improve the employment circumstances and get us back on track." Larry asked, "what do you think are the greatest opportunities today for companies?" Chris said, " Again, taking from some of what I've read in Forbes and the Economist and what have you. I think outcome of the cleansing of the Great Recession of the 2000s is that the weaker companies have been pushed aside so there's not as much competition. The stronger companies, the old Darwin issue around survival of the fittest, I think, creates some, or ought to create some enthusiasm for companies that have made it. I think employees today are more vigilant because they're concerned. No one can afford to be complacent. At the end of the day it's a lot better than it was in 2008-9, so we're headed in the right direction. And corporations have what, $2.5 Trillion in cash and our government has put a lot of money into our economy, so I think that things are looking better." Chris also has some great advice for leaders...listen for more...

Hickenlooper: Changing the Culture of an Entire State
Gov. John Hickenlooper, ACG Captial Growth Conference 20111012_ 5/9/11 - Gov. John Hickenlooper, was the Day 1 keynote speaker at the 2011 ACG Corporate Growth Conference. In this video segment he has some hard-hitting words about the Colorado culture as it relates to business. "The Colorado culture is 'not in my backyard’, we're not really pro business and in a recession like this you see, in a very sharp contrast, how much that can catch up to you. Right now, in Texas, I can guarantee you there is no such culture. In Texas every single person, if you're a Texan, if you're in elementary school, high school, college or in business - at any level - everybody is pro business, and everybody is pro Texas. Part of what we have to do in this country is make sure that the entire country begins to get that same kind of attitude of trust. I think it's important for us to compete on the international economic stage. So, how to make it happen in Colorado? I think there are three major components of how you begin to change the culture of a state that way. Jeff Immelt, CEO of General Electric said, "The most important thing that I've learned since becoming CEO is context. How your company fits into the world and how you respond to it." Now he's talking strictly from a corporate perspective, but I think the same thing is true, the context, when you're trying to change the attitude, the perspective of an entire state. I don't mean a few leaders, I mean the people who get paid $10 an hour working in a convenience store or building widgets. How do we get everybody to be more pro business? Part of that, if we're going to be pro business we have to hold ourselves to the highest ethical standards... If we're going to encourage natural gas drilling... we have almost more than any other state in America. If you take Utah Colorado and Wyoming, we have roughly 3/4s of the total natural gas in the country, and it burns significantly cleaner than gasoline in vehicles, it's a third cheaper than gasoline in vehicles and it prevents us from sending billions of dollars to foreign shores. Now, I'm all for drilling for natural gas, but if we're going to do that we better make sure that there are no spills, people aren't putting fills into our surface waters, that we hold ourselves to the highest environmental standards, we must commit ourselves to respecting and protecting our land and water; that those legacy elements that attract so many people here. If we don't have that contextual recognition. We have to define the very high ethical standards, environmental standards if we're going to get people to be pro business. If we don't have that contextual recognition we're going to be bumping our heads against a wall the whole way through. We started and are half-way through what we call the bottom-up economic development planning process - that's not bottoms-up. I don't think any other states have tried this. But we went out to all 64 counties in Colorado and said we want each county to go out and have as many discussion as you can - What do you want your economy to look like in 20, 40 years? And, how are you going to get there? What are your strengths and weaknesses, threats and opportunities? And not just economic development professionals, but also the Rotary Club members, the school teachers and police officers, the mechanic at the garage..." For more, WATCH the VIDEO...

Steve Forbes: Colorado and the national economy
Steve Forbes, CEO Forbes Media - Press Conference following Keynote address to ACG Capital Growth Conference 2011enclosure-voice 998_ 5/9/11 - While he is not going to run for president, Steve has some very strong beliefs. Steve Forbes, Chairman of Forbes Media and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes Magazine was the Day 2 keynote speaker at the 2011 ACG Corporate Growth Conference. After his address and book signing Larry attended a very open press conference with Mr. Forbes. Larry asked, "During your speech you talked about the national economy, what do you see as Colorado's strengths and where you see growth here in our state?" While he was nice enough to say, "Good to see you again, Lord Nelson." he went onto reply, "Colorado has an enormous advantage as we get our economy back on track in the next few years, and that is quality of life. One of the things technology enables you to do is literally put the world at your fingertips. Geography doesn't much matter anymore. So Colorado needs to preserve what it has but I think you're going to see more in the way of technology, you have a business friendly environment. You get a little bit of it now in aviation and aeronautics, you see it in finance. A note of caution in the area of energy, Colorado has a huge future but there will be turbulence in the industry. I think the amount of natural gas will help cushion any fluctuations when the dollar is stabilized again. The good news is the U.S. is going to be a major exporter of natural gas in the next decade. We are the Saudi Arabia of natural gas and the nice thing is you're going to see more and more utilities using natural gas to generate electricity." Larry asked, "Do you think the government, state or local, or business should be responsible for attracting more business to Colorado?" Mr. Forbes replied, "The key thing to remember in attracting business is to put yourself on the other side, and say, 'what would stand in the way of someone moving a business here'? People are looking for a very friendly environment. By contrast California's been very hostile to business which is why a lot of businesses have moved out of California. So put yourself on the other side. What are all the steps to get permits? Are there a lot of things that drag the process out? Try to streamline them so people know if they want to do something here it can be done with dispatch. They can focus on getting it done instead of how many months, how many years, as it does in other parts of the country, before you can get moving." Listen for much more...

Brad Feld, Managing Director, Foundry Group Brad Feld: Community college to MIT
enclosure-voice 1004_ 4/25/11 - This is part 2 of Brad Feld's Interrogation. Jill Van Matre, Associate Director of Atlas and co-moderates this last Entrepreneurs Unplugged event for Spring 2011 with Brad Bernthal (BB) who is a clinical law professor at the law school and Director of the Silicon Flatirons Center Entrepreneurship Initiative interviewed Brad panel style. Part 2 begins with Professor Bernthal’s query: "Take us from the community college to MIT and the start of Feld Technologies." Brad replied, "I was your typical high school kid in Dallas, I did well in school, ran track. I was moderately social when I wasn't reading or playing with my computer. I was a pretty good tennis player until, I discovered computers and girls. And those two things ruined my tennis career when I was about age 14. I never really thought about where to go to college." (Here we have the two-and-a-half minute video, View Video- the MIT experience.) It was the girlfriend... in 8th grade - she was fascinated with MIT. and that stuck in Brad's head so he applied. He got in early and threw away all his other college applications. So, he went to MIT and MIT was a fascinating place. Brad says he's glad he went there. It was the right place for him. "Because," he said, "MIT is a daily assault on your self-esteem. You realize there is no such thing as being the smartest guy in the room... forget it, there's just no way that's going to happen. So that dynamic plays forward in your life when you realize you don't have to be the smartest person in the room to be successful and accomplished. But, you have to work hard, you have to be focused, you have to go after something you really care about. and that's how I got to that place where I started what became Feld Technologies. Next week, Jill Van Matre asks Brad to talk about the beginning of Feld Technologies.
