The steering committee of the COBRT Education Task Force met on December 14th. Their special guest was Jo O'Brien, Assistant to the Commissioner of Education for Learning and Results. Many key issues were covered by Jo O'Brien and Gayle Dendinger, Chairman of COBRT and further discussed by members of the Task Force. Here are some key issues covered.

1. Reinforce 7 Practices for High Performance in Low Income Schools:
a. Clear academic focus;
b. Clear standards and expectations;
c. Insistent leadership with follow-through;
d. Aggressive alignment to curriculum standards;
e. Frequent measurement and monitoring;
f.  Professional development and budget alignment to academic     needs;
g. NO EXCUSES - NO EXCEPTIONS!

2. Historically ineffective methods of working with education:
a. Gifting of money and/or technology
b. Corporate distraction (i.e., Toyota example)

3. More effective ways to interact with education:
a. Pittsburgh newspaper
b. UPS
c. Practical math programs with architects
d. Valvoline
e. Cataloging best lessons in a "master lesson" which captures the best data
f. Working with colleges to develop programs whereby new teachers are trained effectively in the teaching of curriculum standards
