Ready or Not,
You are a Citizen Foot Soldier
Securing
the Rockies Conference held
in Denver June 11-13, 2002 was a call to arms as well as a realistic picture
of what our region needs as it relates to all forms of terrorism. Some
of the information (backed by hard facts and research) was downright scary.
As frightening as it was, useful strategies were discussed and we are
hopeful that Americans will respond. Deputy Assistant Director of the
Cyber Crime Division, FBI, James Farnan presented instances that dramatized
the need to protect our personal and business systems from the criminal
element engaged in "Identity Theft" along with other nefarious
activities.
A
big challenge is that Americans believe it can't happen to them. As horrifying
as September 11th was, many US citizens almost relate to Manhattan as
a distant TV series. Most believe it could never happen in the heartland
of America. Yet the experts at this conference expressed that heartland
it is, and Colorado is on the top three list of guesstimates... very sobering.
This
conference brought together key decision makers from federal, state and
local government, public safety, private industry, and public health to
hear factual background information on threats and challenges to the security
of the region, and to engage in discussion and dialogue with colleagues
about how this region must respond to the issue of "homeland security"
for the Rockies. Left: James Bean, Intelligence Operations Specialist.
The
FBI - Denver Division, InfraGard, and the University of Denver with the
National Law Enforcement and Correction Technology Center hosted the conference.
Taping of this 3-day session was not allowed, but w3w3 Talk Radio will
be conducting follow-up interviews with many of the expert presenters.
Larry & Pat will also check in with a few "citizen foot soldiers"
to see how they are adapting.
