A Message from Paul sent, June 2006
I hope that you do not feel that this email is too impersonal. Since being diagnosed with Lower Esophageal Cancer on March 24, 2006, as many of you already know, I have been undergoing chemo radiation at the Mayo Clinic in Scottsdale, AZ. I am now in week 3 of a 5 ½ week radiation protocol. The chemo protocol will continue until mid June. Somewhere around the end of July the reconstruction surgery takes place.
Once upon a time I didn’t know that Gastro Esophageal Reflux Disease (GERD) is sweeping the world as an epidemic in its own right. As we baby boomers age, the years of stress, Pepto-Bismol, Rolaids, etc. are presenting more and more individuals such as myself to the oncology world.
Some of you have successfully battled cancer, some are yet to do so, some will never experience this particular demon, but, as we all know, will encounter other challenges. I am learning to take everyday one day at a time and know that I am so fortunate compared to others I have met. Near term thinking is new ground for me as I have for many years planned months and years ahead.
As a side note, as you know what a medical device guy I am, in each exam room at Mayo I have noted hanging on the wall are located the 6 instruments of basic diagnostics; a bright hand-held exam light, an Ophthalmoscope, an Otto-scope, a blood pressure cuff, a stethoscope and a thermometer. Not different from 100 years ago. It is the miracle of bio-therapeutic technologies that, many cases makes such a difference. Never the less, a treatment can only be as good as the diagnosis. It all starts with observation and comparison. Observe, evaluate and adjust accordingly.
Thanks for your thoughts and friendship.
Be diligent!
Paul
