Bob Ogden:
Profile of a Leader: Persistence and Partners
For the Profile of a Leader Series Larry talked with Bob Ogdon, Founder and CEO of SwiftPage. Larry heard him speak before Swiftpage was launched and knew he was a winner. Bob pointed out how important partners are and highlighted Frank Johnson, Tom Lopez and Matt Showalter. He went onto say, "I have the philosophy that you can't be an entrepreneur without partners, it's too hard. You need somebody's shoulder to cry on, someone to encourage you and you encourage them and you go fight the battle together. That whole understanding of partnership is what Tom taught me and I really feel lucky that I had him as a partner for so many years." Larry got into: What influenced the formation of your values?; What was a challenge you couldn't overcome and had to live with?; A major turning point in your career? And then he asked one of his favorite questions, "What advice do you have for entrepreneurs?" Bob's reply is very insightful. "I think the biggest advice would be to never give up. What an entrepreneur does and brings to the table is really the energy and the vision but not necessarily the answer. I think people get hung up thinking they have to have the answer when they start. Really what you want to do is get yourself in play, in the market and then let the market tell you your path. You do that, you listen and you live long enough, you'll eventually get a really valuable company. You have to have the legs to live long enough, to have the willingness to listen and, I think if you can accomplish those two things, there's no reason you can't build the business you want." By the way, all three of Bob's children are part of the Swiftpage family. Check it out... 824_ 4/12/10 - Colleen Abdoulah:
Profile of a Leader and what it takes
She has been in business for over 25 years and now w3w3.com honors Colleen Abdoulah, President/CEO, WOW (Wide Open West, Internet Cable & Phone) and brings another of the Profile of a Leader interviews of our top business leaders here in the Business and Technology community. Larry asked many questions including, "What advice would you give to a company, maybe going through a period where they feel they need to improve?" Colleen replied, "Here are three specific elements of what we need and don't need. I think we need less ego in business. People are very much into the hierarchy, the titles, even their language. The corresponding characteristic would be more humility. Being humble enough to say, 'I'm here to serve you!'. We're all here to make each other the best that we can be. I think we need less pride, especially false pride. I think we take ourselves far too seriously, and we need to replace that pride with laughter, we need to be able to laugh at ourselves - enjoy ourselves. We perform better when we enjoy it, we learn more when we're enjoying the learning, right? And lastly, less fear and intimidation. I think many cultures say, ' you better tow the line or else.. trying to motivate from fear and intimidation is ridiculous in my mind. If people know you care about them and want them to succeed - you are motivating them to do their best everyday! I think it's those loving attitudes that people feel, understand and get energized by, far more than we do by fear. Not that fear doesn't motivate, but I think it isn't in a productive and healthy manner. So if a culture can create more of a culture of humility, of laughter, of loving attitudes, I think you will just see people shine." Listen for more... Related Links: WOW! Governor John Hickenlooper: You Are Deputized
1035_ 6/20/11 -
This is the fourth and final excerpt from Governor Hickenlooper's keynote address to the ACG Denver 2011 Corporate Growth Conference. The Governor ends by deputizing you, enrolling your help to make Colorado a strong, healthy state capable of attracting new businesses and entrepreneurs here. We rejoin the governor here... He certainly has challenges and he has plans for this great state... "When you've got a 65,000 person workforce, how do you get to them all? Well, one place at a time. We talk about three E's. Effective, Efficient and Elegant. Government should be Effective in the sense if we say we're going to do something, it should matter and when we say we're going to do something - we should do it. We should be efficient in the sense that when we do something and we do it effectively we get it done, we do it at the lowest possible cost. And it should be elegant. Elegant in the sense that both sides of the transaction should be raised up. Both the citizen receiving the service or the benefit and the state worker who is providing it. Which often doesn't happen. When is the last time you went into renew your driver's license... that's the opposite of elegant - we're going to change that! It doesn't take more money to do things right..." Watch and listen for more ...Remember, You Are Deputized...

Steve Forbes: Colorado and the national economy
1033_ 6/20/11 -
No he is not going to run for president. Steve Forbes, Chairman of Forbes Media and Editor-in-Chief of Forbes Magazine was the Day 2 keynote speaker at the 2011 ACG Corporate Growth Conference. After his address and book signing Larry attended a very open press conference with Mr. Forbes. Larry asked, "During your speech you talked about the national economy, what do you see as Colorado's strengths and where you see growth here in our state?" While he was nice enough to say, "Good to see you again, Lord Nelson." he went onto reply, "Colorado has an enormous advantage as we get our economy back on track in the next few years, and that is quality of life. One of the things technology enables you to do is literally put the world at your fingertips. Geography doesn't much matter anymore. So Colorado needs to preserve what it has but I think you're going to see more in the way of technology, you have a business friendly environment. You get a little bit of it now in aviation and aeronautics, you see it in finance. A note of caution in the area of energy, Colorado has a huge future but there will be turbulence in the industry ...Watch and listen for much more...

Art Rancis: Profile of an International Leader
1037_ 6/27/11 -
We were talking with Art Rancis an international business consultant with client projects all over the world. After discussing current and future plans Larry asked, "Let’s rewind a little and get a historical perspective of the experiences and events that shaped your growth. Who was a very influential person in your earlier life and what was the key point you learned from that influence?" Art has a very interesting history and replied, "From a family standpoint, it was clearly my father who was politically active in our town and always had groups of people at our house to try to move some initiative forward. He was a community organizer before it ever became a popular term. And then there was my mother who was a short woman but everyone knew her as a fireball. Whereas my father gave me the skill to start things, my mother gave me the backbone to see them through. In business, I would have to identify two people who were to be inextricably connected via a large corporate bankruptcy. The first was Jessie Aweida who started StorageTek, and Ryal Poppy who came in later to manage StorageTek through its bankruptcy after Jessie left. Jessie created an immensely successful company by providing end users with alternative data storage products to what was only available from IBM and DEC. Jessie had very broad shoulders relative to the compensation of the field force. On more than one occasion he was heard to say "I love it when people make more than I do.” Think about this, this was the early 80's, and we had field reps making more than $300K and $400K per year! An immense amount of money, but these people also worked extremely hard to generate profitable revenue for all of the company. It is sad that we have too many CEOs that are jealous of what rainmakers make, at the expense of their company." Listen, there's much more...

Abraham Maslow's hierarchy, the five levels of human needs, define the fundamental reasons why human beings do or don't do all things. Then on the other hand, are the mechanisms that process information as it relates to the satisfaction or dissatisfaction of our five levels of human needs. They provide a framework for understanding how we make decisions, why we take actions or our lack of action, our likes and dislikes, our subconscious priorities and how we communicate and interact with others. Brad Feld: His story continues in Entrepreneurs Unplugged
1034_ 6/20/11 -
It wasn't a very deliberate transition to becoming a venture capitalist for Brad Feld. "I sold my first company; I worked for AmeriData for a year-and-a-half; I had a consulting business - we grew a $2 million business to $5 million in the first six to nine months - they/we then bought a $20 million version of what we were and merged. I got involved now with the deal team - and basically everything that we were buying was a hardware resale company. And every one of them had a founder who was a software guy who thought he had created something magical." Brad's job was to go hang out with them and when he left that software guy was supposed to feel inferior, inept. "It was a lot of fun, essentially almost all the software was uniformly worthless - they were hardware resale companies... That was one part of my job, the other part, this was when Novell Network had crested - Windows NT was just beginning - my job was to be in those discussions too. During this time I made a bunch of investments with my own money." ($50,000 was a big investment to him). In the timeframe of 1994-96 and Brad learned to do equity investments at this time ...Watch and listen for much more...
