Kelly Manning: Tons of Grant Money in Colorado
1040 7/5/11 -
Here we are in the wonderful State of Colorado and there's a ton of money just waiting - funds are for counseling/training programs to help businesses succeed. That might be news to some of you and we're lucky enough to get Kelly Manning to the show. Kelly is the State Director for the Small Business Development Center Network. They have centers across the whole State and cover every single county in Colorado. They also take a regional approach and work with other states, "Because", says Kelly, "we not only want to see the Colorado companies successful in Colorado but maybe successful in other states as well. Of course we want them to stay in Colorado and hubbed in Colorado. The Small Business Development Center Network is a grant program. So, the funds are coming down through the SBA, the Small Business Administration." Kelly's organization, the SBDC Network administers these grants and through them provide free counseling and low cost or no cost training to all entrepreneurs, whether you are a startup or have been in business for 20+ years, they have programs for you. They also have a veterans grant which is regional, working with Kansas and Arizona, and provide funding to put workshops and conferences on to help veterans be successful. "Just recently we received supplemental funding and jobs bill funding, so right now they are running four grant programs. Supplemental funding will go towards clean tech companies, energy companies, manufacturing and international. But the Jobs Bill funding is strictly for existing businesses. We're putting on two types of conferences, Emerging...Listen for more details...

Bart Taylor: Invest Time and Money into Developing Content
1039 7/5/11 -
"Media is not simply the domain of publishers, it's the domain of corporations." Larry interviewed Bart Taylor, Vice President and Publisher of the ColoradoBIZ Magazine. Bart went on, "Let me give you a challenge that companies have right now. Five years ago, as a business, you were probably looking at eNewsletters as an opportunity. Today you are no longer differentiated by the fact that you're publishing a newsletter. Content is the new differentiator. He recommends companies and organizations to invest time and money into developing content to support their business. An interesting recommendation that may need a little discussion for a good understanding. Obviously ColoradoBIZ and w3w3® are in the 'content business'. Bart points out that Larry has written a book about managing change, "I think that is the name of our game as publishers, managing change in a rapidly changing, transformational media market. Media companies/publishers have faced two strong headwinds over the past few years. One, the economy has been lousy - but economies come back. I think the more transcendent, the more fundamental issue that publishers are dealing with today is technology, what technology is doing to change the nature of the media business. But to companies, technology is also providing an opportunity and I think as publishers we need to be very cognizant of the change that technology is having on corporations. I think it would be a mistake for media to think that they are the center of the content universe as they once were. So if you recognize that as a media property, and recognize that businesses have an opportunity now to become publishers and manage content - that's where I am coming from." Years ago w3w3.com and ColoradoBIZ worked together on some things, ColoradoBIZ providing the hard copy and w3w3 the digital, online copy. The future landscape for hard copy publishers was beginning to look rather grim. But ColoradoBIZ changed, moved, adapted to the new market and really did a great job. Bart and Larry go onto discuss the 'New Media' and the 'Digital Media horizon.'...Listen for more...

Bob Ogden:
Profile of a Leader: Persistence and Partners
For the Profile of a Leader Series Larry talked with Bob Ogdon, Founder and CEO of SwiftPage. Larry heard him speak before Swiftpage was launched and knew he was a winner. Bob pointed out how important partners are and highlighted Frank Johnson, Tom Lopez and Matt Showalter. He went onto say, "I have the philosophy that you can't be an entrepreneur without partners, it's too hard. You need somebody's shoulder to cry on, someone to encourage you and you encourage them and you go fight the battle together. That whole understanding of partnership is what Tom taught me and I really feel lucky that I had him as a partner for so many years." Larry got into: What influenced the formation of your values?; What was a challenge you couldn't overcome and had to live with?; A major turning point in your career? And then he asked one of his favorite questions, "What advice do you have for entrepreneurs?" Bob's reply is very insightful. "I think the biggest advice would be to never give up. What an entrepreneur does and brings to the table is really the energy and the vision but not necessarily the answer. I think people get hung up thinking they have to have the answer when they start. Really what you want to do is get yourself in play, in the market and then let the market tell you your path. You do that, you listen and you live long enough, you'll eventually get a really valuable company. You have to have the legs to live long enough, to have the willingness to listen and, I think if you can accomplish those two things, there's no reason you can't build the business you want." By the way, all three of Bob's children are part of the Swiftpage family. Check it out... 824_ 4/12/10 - Colleen Abdoulah:
Profile of a Leader and what it takes
She has been in business for over 25 years and now w3w3.com honors Colleen Abdoulah, President/CEO, WOW (Wide Open West, Internet Cable & Phone) and brings another of the Profile of a Leader interviews of our top business leaders here in the Business and Technology community. Larry asked many questions including, "What advice would you give to a company, maybe going through a period where they feel they need to improve?" Colleen replied, "Here are three specific elements of what we need and don't need. I think we need less ego in business. People are very much into the hierarchy, the titles, even their language. The corresponding characteristic would be more humility. Being humble enough to say, 'I'm here to serve you!'. We're all here to make each other the best that we can be. I think we need less pride, especially false pride. I think we take ourselves far too seriously, and we need to replace that pride with laughter, we need to be able to laugh at ourselves - enjoy ourselves. We perform better when we enjoy it, we learn more when we're enjoying the learning, right? And lastly, less fear and intimidation. I think many cultures say, ' you better tow the line or else.. trying to motivate from fear and intimidation is ridiculous in my mind. If people know you care about them and want them to succeed - you are motivating them to do their best everyday! I think it's those loving attitudes that people feel, understand and get energized by, far more than we do by fear. Not that fear doesn't motivate, but I think it isn't in a productive and healthy manner. So if a culture can create more of a culture of humility, of laughter, of loving attitudes, I think you will just see people shine." Listen for more... Related Links: WOW! Steve Wille: Transform your Management Team Beyond Expectations
1041_ 7/5/11 -
We are in a whirlwind of change. We are here with Steve Wille. Steve is well known here in the business and technical community. He's also the author of Colorful Leadership. People are always asking about change and motivation, and Steve has an interesting approach to the subject. Rather a colorful approach, imagine putting on a pair of 'rose colored' glasses. You think optimistic, you like everybody - everybody likes you. Steve uses that as a symbol for good relationship, the People Filter in your glasses. That isn't the only picture, Steve believes sometimes you have to take off the rose colored glasses and replace them with blue glasses. Take a cold hard look at things. Look at the numbers, look at reality. Are things working? A little more skeptical picture. Still there's more, another pair of green glasses that spot the strangeness around us. The chaos, the innovation, new, exciting things. A business, an organization dies if it doesn't do something new and exciting - there is no future. "So", says Steve, "the optimal leader changes the glasses and looks at the same situation through the three different filters and makes the best decision in the situation. Of course they're discussing the 3-Filters Technology™ developed by Larry Nelson and taught by Larry globally for many years. Steve has been studying the 3-Filters Technology™ and brings a new perspective, and a colorful understanding to working with the 3-Filters Technology™. On July 15th Steve and Larry will be presenting this bright new picture of the 3-Filters Technology™ for managers and their teams. Be sure to check out the information on the seminar titled, "Transform your Management Team Beyond Expectations". There's a link in the Related Links section, of this article to the RMIMA website where you can find all the details and register. Remember to bring you entire management team - it could be the best investment you can make in your existing management team, and a great opportunity for the emerging leaders in your organization. Art Rancis: Difference Between Workaholics and Peak Performers
1038 7/5/11 -
This is part 2 of an interview with Art Rancis for our Profile of a Leader series. Art talked about some books that influenced his life. He talked about, “Peak Performers” by Dr. Charles Garfield. "I was sitting pool side in Lake Tahoe at the time and he was making the point there was a big difference between workaholics and peak performers. Workaholics had nothing else in their lives, but Peak performers wanted to make a difference. Then, on page 194 of the book, he made another important point. David Ogilvy, founder of the advertising giant Ogilvy & Mather, sends a Russian doll to every person newly appointed to head an office in the Ogilvy & Mather chain. The doll contains five progressively smaller dolls. The message inside the smallest one reads: 'If each of us hires people who are smaller than we are, we shall become a company of dwarfs, but if each of us hires people who are bigger than we are, Ogilvy & Mather will become a company of giants.' Both points would influence me for years to come. Another book was What They Don't teach you at Harvard Business School. Here the author Mark McCormack highlights what entrepreneurs will not learn at Harvard. Very insightful, and still relevant today. Obviously the book The World is Flat is required reading by anyone in business today, but also I would recommend The Art of Winning by Dennis Conner. I had the privilege of sailing with Dennis during the training phase for the 1994 Americas Cup. Finally, I would add a book titled The Road Map to Repeatable Success by Barbara and Kris Bicknell." Larry asked, "What challenge did you encounter that you had to learn to live with and is there a lesson that could benefit our listeners?" Art replied, "When I was 9, I remember being in my parent’s home during a party in the company of a number of Russian Jews (my family was Latvian and a number of Russian Jews had immigrated to the US with my family at the same time)." Art Rancis: Profile of an International Leader
1037_ 6/27/11 -
We were talking with Art Rancis an international business consultant with client projects all over the world. After discussing current and future plans Larry asked, "Let’s rewind a little and get a historical perspective of the experiences and events that shaped your growth. Who was a very influential person in your earlier life and what was the key point you learned from that influence?" Art has a very interesting history and replied, "From a family standpoint, it was clearly my father who was politically active in our town and always had groups of people at our house to try to move some initiative forward. He was a community organizer before it ever became a popular term. And then there was my mother who was a short woman but everyone knew her as a fireball. Whereas my father gave me the skill to start things, my mother gave me the backbone to see them through. In business, I would have to identify two people who were to be inextricably connected via a large corporate bankruptcy. The first was Jessie Aweida who started StorageTek, and Ryal Poppy who came in later to manage StorageTek through its bankruptcy after Jessie left. Jessie created an immensely successful company by providing end users with alternative data storage products to what was only available from IBM and DEC. Jessie had very broad shoulders relative to the compensation of the field force. On more than one occasion he was heard to say "I love it when people make more than I do.” Think about this, this was the early 80's, and we had field reps making more than $300K and $400K per year! An immense amount of money, but these people also worked extremely hard to generate profitable revenue for all of the company. It is sad that we have too many CEOs that are jealous of what rainmakers make, at the expense of their company." Listen, there's much more...

Abraham Maslow's hierarchy, the five levels of human needs, define the fundamental reasons why human beings do or don't do all things. Then on the other hand, are the mechanisms that process information as it relates to the satisfaction or dissatisfaction of our five levels of human needs. They provide a framework for understanding how we make decisions, why we take actions or our lack of action, our likes and dislikes, our subconscious priorities and how we communicate and interact with others.
