Kelly Manning: Financial Challenges and Solutions
Kelly Manning, State Director, SBDC Networkenclosure-voice 1045_ 7/11/11 - We're taking a little different look at businesses today and we're with Kelly Manning, State Director for the Small Business Development Center Network (SBDC Network). Covering every county in the state of Colorado the SBDC Network provides free counseling and free to low cost business training - Kelly said, "We help all entrepreneurs to start, grow and prosper your business. That's our mission statement and we really hold true to that." Whether you're a startup or have been in business for 20 years, the SBDC have assistance that can help you be successful. We've followed Kelly and her work for a number of years - certainly in position to know, we asked Kelly what she saw as the biggest challenge for companies today. Kelly didn't think it would be a surprise that finance challenges are right up top. So, small businesses having access to capital, whether that's startup, growth or in some cases to cover payroll - "...what we're finding is banks are not lending nearly what they had. Although they say they're lightening up - [we'll see]. It's really a challenge and what we're trying to do is help businesses understand their financials. Where do you need to cut costs? Where are your savings? Advertising, are you getting your 'return on investment'? And how much?, Is it worth it? So if you are unable to get the funding, the next step is to look at your financials and understanding your financial statements." Our second classic question looks at what opportunities are present. Kelly didn't hesitate, "It's coming up to an election year again, and the biggest thing in any election year is how important small businesses are." The opportunity is for small businesses to shine with more publicity, recognition as really being the backbone of our economy. Kelly goes on to say...

Bart Taylor: Invest Time and Money into Developing Content
Bart Taylor, Vice President & Publisher, ColoradoBIZenclosure-voice 1039 7/5/11 - "Media is not simply the domain of publishers, it's the domain of corporations." Larry interviewed Bart Taylor, Vice President and Publisher of the ColoradoBIZ Magazine. Bart went on, "Let me give you a challenge that companies have right now. Five years ago, as a business, you were probably looking at eNewsletters as an opportunity. Today you are no longer differentiated by the fact that you're publishing a newsletter. Content is the new differentiator. He recommends companies and organizations to invest time and money into developing content to support their business. An interesting recommendation that may need a little discussion for a good understanding. Obviously ColoradoBIZ and w3w3® are in the 'content business'. Bart points out that Larry has written a book about managing change, "I think that is the name of our game as publishers, managing change in a rapidly changing, transformational media market. Media companies/publishers have faced two strong headwinds over the past few years. One, the economy has been lousy - but economies come back. I think the more transcendent, the more fundamental issue that publishers are dealing with today is technology, what technology is doing to change the nature of the media business. But to companies, technology is also providing an opportunity and I think as publishers we need to be very cognizant of the change that technology is having on corporations. I think it would be a mistake for media to think that they are the center of the content universe as they once were. So if you recognize that as a media property, and recognize that businesses have an opportunity now to become publishers and manage content - that's where I am coming from." Years ago w3w3.com and ColoradoBIZ worked together on some things, ColoradoBIZ providing the hard copy and w3w3 the digital, online copy. The future landscape for hard copy publishers was beginning to look rather grim. But ColoradoBIZ changed, moved, adapted to the new market and really did a great job. Bart and Larry go onto discuss the 'New Media' and the 'Digital Media horizon.'...Listen for more...

They have centers across the whole State and cover every single county in Colorado. Jason Haislmaier, Partner, Holme Roberts & Owen, Boulder Jason Haislmaier: The law is a couple of steps behind the technology
enclosure-voice 1045_ 7/11/11 - One of the things that keeps Jason excited and interested in his work is that it is constantly changing and the law is always a couple of steps behind the technology, and sometimes desperately trying to catch up. Jason Haislmaier, Partner at Holme Roberts & Owen (HRO) in Boulder focuses his practice on IP and technology issues for emerging growth companies here in the Boulder/Denver corridor, out in California and Internationally and then also works with those same issues for larger companies on larger issues. These could be around protection of technology or intellectual property, commercialization, transactions, license agreements, outsourcing development agreements - really the full gambit of protection, commercialization and enforcement of IP rights and technology. As Jason and Larry talked, one of the areas that has come up recently is around the collection and use of, particularly, personally identifiable information and the privacy and security issues that come with that. Jason said, "We've had the commercial Internet for upwards of 15 years and we've had websites and web services out there collecting personally identifiable and other information from their users and from other third parties. And you've also had, over that time, an evolution of legal regulation and legal requirements on what you must be doing if you are obtaining that data, and then using that data. You also have a situation now, where we have, I think I would say conservatively over the next several years, a real situation where we're going to have some big sea change in terms of the legislative aspects" There's more detail, listen now...

Art Rancis, Profile of a Leader Part 3 of 3 Art Rancis: The reality is that many of us multitask all of the time
enclosure-voice 1045_ 7/11/11 - This is part 3 of 3 of an interview with Art Rancis for our Profile of a Leader series. Larry asked, "What do you do, to bring balance into your personal and professional life?" Art replied, "If you do work that is largely cerebral, then for balance you should do something physical…..for example, do something with your hands. I do two things, one is cooking. I started out by going to cooking school in Aspen for several summers and working for free in the kitchens of Aspen’s top restaurants during the evenings. I not only learned great recipes and skills like knife techniques, but also the kitchen teamwork that is essential at a 5 star restaurant. Another example in my case is amateur car racing. I race cars....for relaxation. What? How can that be relaxing? The reality is that many of us multitask all of the time between phone calls, e-mails, texting, etc. However, when you are on a track at 150MPH, you are very focused on what you are doing and are no longer multi-tasking.....actually relaxing. Larry followed with, "What will your legacy be and how do you want to be remembered?" Art's interesting reply, "First of all, let me set something straight….I am no where near to checking out. When I turned 40 I made sure that everyone knew I was only 1/3rd of the way through my life. But to answer the question, I hope that I am remembered as a Renaissance type of man. I love business but I also love the arts (I started my career as a professional photographer and cinematographer), I can wire a house, fix plumbing, and teach a course in fine cooking (I just did one recently for a charity benefit). Now back to business. Some people box me into the category of being a “Serial Entrepreneur”. Listen for more... Part 1... Part 2...

Larry Nelson, Author, 3-Filters Technology™Steve Wille, Author, Colorful Leadership Steve Wille: Transform your Management Team Beyond Expectations
enclosure-voice 1041_ 7/5/11 - We are in a whirlwind of change. We are here with Steve Wille. Steve is well known here in the business and technical community. He's also the author of Colorful Leadership. People are always asking about change and motivation, and Steve has an interesting approach to the subject. Rather a colorful approach, imagine putting on a pair of 'rose colored' glasses. You think optimistic, you like everybody - everybody likes you. Steve uses that as a symbol for good relationship, the People Filter in your glasses. That isn't the only picture, Steve believes sometimes you have to take off the rose colored glasses and replace them with blue glasses. Take a cold hard look at things. Look at the numbers, look at reality. Are things working? A little more skeptical picture. Still there's more, another pair of green glasses that spot the strangeness around us. The chaos, the innovation, new, exciting things. A business, an organization dies if it doesn't do something new and exciting - there is no future. "So", says Steve, "the optimal leader changes the glasses and looks at the same situation through the three different filters and makes the best decision in the situation. Of course they're discussing the 3-Filters Technology™ developed by Larry Nelson and taught by Larry globally for many years. Steve has been studying the 3-Filters Technology™ and brings a new perspective, and a colorful understanding to working with the 3-Filters Technology™. On July 15th Steve and Larry will be presenting this bright new picture of the 3-Filters Technology™ for managers and their teams. Be sure to check out the information on the seminar titled, "Transform your Management Team Beyond Expectations". There's a link in the Related Links section, of this article to the RMIMA website where you can find all the details and register. Remember to bring you entire management team - it could be the best investment you can make in your existing management team, and a great opportunity for the emerging leaders in your organization. The 3-Filters Technology™ is Powerful - Proven and People-Oriented!

Art Rancis, Profile of a Leader 7-5-2011 Art Rancis: Difference Between Workaholics and Peak Performers
enclosure-voice 1038 7/5/11 - This is part 2 of an interview with Art Rancis for our Profile of a Leader series. Art talked about some books that influenced his life. He talked about, “Peak Performers” by Dr. Charles Garfield. "I was sitting pool side in Lake Tahoe at the time and he was making the point there was a big difference between workaholics and peak performers. Workaholics had nothing else in their lives, but Peak performers wanted to make a difference. Then, on page 194 of the book, he made another important point. David Ogilvy, founder of the advertising giant Ogilvy & Mather, sends a Russian doll to every person newly appointed to head an office in the Ogilvy & Mather chain. The doll contains five progressively smaller dolls. The message inside the smallest one reads: 'If each of us hires people who are smaller than we are, we shall become a company of dwarfs, but if each of us hires people who are bigger than we are, Ogilvy & Mather will become a company of giants.' Both points would influence me for years to come. Another book was What They Don't teach you at Harvard Business School. Here the author Mark McCormack highlights what entrepreneurs will not learn at Harvard. Very insightful, and still relevant today. Obviously the book The World is Flat is required reading by anyone in business today, but also I would recommend The Art of Winning by Dennis Conner. I had the privilege of sailing with Dennis during the training phase for the 1994 Americas Cup. Finally, I would add a book titled The Road Map to Repeatable Success by Barbara and Kris Bicknell." Larry asked, "What challenge did you encounter that you had to learn to live with and is there a lesson that could benefit our listeners?" Art replied, "When I was 9, I remember being in my parent’s home during a party in the company of a number of Russian Jews (my family was Latvian and a number of Russian Jews had immigrated to the US with my family at the same time)." Art Rancis: Profile of an International Leader
Art Rancis, International Leader - Profileenclosure-voice 1037_ 6/27/11 - We were talking with Art Rancis an international business consultant with client projects all over the world. After discussing current and future plans Larry asked, "Let’s rewind a little and get a historical perspective of the experiences and events that shaped your growth. Who was a very influential person in your earlier life and what was the key point you learned from that influence?" Art has a very interesting history and replied, "From a family standpoint, it was clearly my father who was politically active in our town and always had groups of people at our house to try to move some initiative forward. He was a community organizer before it ever became a popular term. And then there was my mother who was a short woman but everyone knew her as a fireball. Whereas my father gave me the skill to start things, my mother gave me the backbone to see them through. In business, I would have to identify two people who were to be inextricably connected via a large corporate bankruptcy. The first was Jessie Aweida who started StorageTek, and Ryal Poppy who came in later to manage StorageTek through its bankruptcy after Jessie left. Jessie created an immensely successful company by providing end users with alternative data storage products to what was only available from IBM and DEC. Jessie had very broad shoulders relative to the compensation of the field force. On more than one occasion he was heard to say "I love it when people make more than I do.” Think about this, this was the early 80's, and we had field reps making more than $300K and $400K per year! An immense amount of money, but these people also worked extremely hard to generate profitable revenue for all of the company. It is sad that we have too many CEOs that are jealous of what rainmakers make, at the expense of their company." Listen, there's much more...
