Larry interviewed Jill (VanMatre) Dupré, Associate Director of the ATLAS Institute. The ATLAS Institute is an innovative campus-wide initiative in education, research, creative work and outreach in which information and communication technology is the enabling force. ATLAS programs bring together students, educators, artists, writers, scholars and leaders from the academy, industry, non-profits and government to create a multidisciplinary environment that contributes to the understanding of the interaction of ICT and human society, and to the realization of the full potential of that interaction. The ATLAS Institute is affiliated with the University of Colorado Graduate School and the College of Engineering & Applied Science. "ATLAS leads discovery and innovation at the intersection of technology and society. We seek to better understand the interaction of people and ICT, and to help realize the full potential of that interaction. ATLAS interdisciplinary programs help develop creative designers, critical thinkers, effective leaders, capable learners, innovative teachers and engaged global citizens. ATLAS teaches students a new way to think about what is possible, and to use the computer as a tool to realize fully that vision. ATLAS teaches students not how to acquire information, but rather how to select, evaluate, integrate and synthesize information into usable knowledge. ATLAS acts as a campus and national resource in the area of technology for teaching and learning."

A valuable resource for commercializing
1324_ 7/15/13-12/12
Kate Tallman, Director of Tech Transfer for CU Boulder (Kate Tallman has been promoted to interim leader of the University of Colorado's Technology Transfer Office.) and Tim Bour, Executive Director, Boulder Innovation Center (BIC) discussed commercialization of innovative ideas and inventions as well as support offered entrepreneurs. (This is part 1 of a 2-part interview done in Jan 2010) Kate introduced him, "Tim's been with the Boulder Innovation Center for a little over 3 years, and he has built the program from one focus mainly on software and organics and natural into one that now works with all kinds and sectors of technology including clean tech and the biosciences space. So the BIC has become a valuable resource for commercializing university technology. Can you give us some background on what the BIC is?" Tim replied, "First of all, most traditionally, people think of the BIC as an incubator, but with some important differences. We're structured as a nonprofit, as a 501c6 nonprofit. We don't have any incubator space, we don't take any equity in our clients and we don't charge any success fees. This is different than many incubators you'd find around the country, but we find that it's really dealt well in terms of working with universities and it also does well in terms of growing jobs in the community, and that's one of our key outcomes. We currently have six market segments; we work in the area of clean tech which includes bio fuels, solar, software, building materials, anything that has a reduction in energy and efficiency in energy…there is much more and check out part 2, An opportunity for angel investors and startups: There are two elements of the financial picture. One is how do we get funded and the second one is what do we do to help the companies we work with get funded. Those are similar but...

Feld and Mendelson - How venture capital deals work
11089_ 7/8/13-8/2011 -
(Recorded 8/29/11) - When Brad Feld and Jason Mendelson sat down to write their book the goal was to aim it at every entrepreneur, to really help them understand how venture capital deals work. Brad Feld, in Tuscany, Italy talks with Larry Nelson via Skype to tell us about his newest book, "Venture Deals...Be smarter than your lawyer and venture capitalist". The inspiration for the book came from the Term Sheet Series that Jason and Brad wrote about five-six years ago. This is a particularly valuable book for entrepreneurs looking for money... You'll get an insider's view of the venture deal process, the different players involved on the deal side including how venture firms are setup. And, they talk about how an entrepreneur should think about the fund raising process. The term sheet is a very complicated document and there are a lot of things that people negotiate. But there are essentially only two things that matter which are economics and control. Here they've spent a lot of time helping the reader understand which terms related to economics and which terms were related to control and how and what that meant. It's meant to be a guide not a text book with material that can be very dry and boring. They've made fun of lawyers, venture capitalists and themselves along the way, but there goal was to...don't miss the rest of Brad's advice, listen now!

Change Is Not an Event, It Is an Ongoing Process (the Same with Chaos)
534_ 7/1/13 -
Mastering change is one of Pat and Larry Nelson's favorite topics. There's a good reason. They have lived in and owned businesses in five foreign countries stretching from Norway to Australia. They are truly serial entrepreneurs as they have started more than a dozen companies. Some were extremely successful and others learning experiences. One thing that was true in every situation were the rushing changes. At times they were victims and others they were victors. Larry has conducted seminars for numerous companies both large and small, public and private sectors, in dozen countries, on the subject of 'Mastering Change in the Midst of Chaos'. In this recorded discussion Larry and Pat discuss the 'Six Truths About Change'. The topic includes; Resistance, Involvement, Making Losers, Vision, Benefits, and Follow up. Like the Nelsons say, "Master Change Before It Masters You." Listen now...

"What is Social Entrepreneurship?"
570_ 7/15/13-10/08_
Dr. Paul Bauer,Clinical Professor, Daniels College of Business, DU and Chris Pelley, Managing Director, Capital Investment Management Group discuss this social entrepreneurship with Larry. Paul explained, "For me, it goes back to the Entrepreneur part of the equation. Like Einstein said, We can’t solve the problems with the same thinking that we created them with." Entrepreneurship is a mechanism that will allow us to address and make some real progress with the challenges we face today. The ‘social’ part for me says what we’re trying to do is create value wealth for the community, not just for the individual. I think business does that and I think business has a definite role to play in that. That’s why I think this is a topic that is very relevant to business today." Chris went on from there, "I come from the business entrepreneurship side of the equation, and yet we see a common path, a parallel direction, in terms of solving many of the world’s problems, whether it’s through business enterprise or social enterprise. My interpretation of their definition of social entrepreneurs is, 1.) It’s people who are going to use creative thinking in solving any problem. 2.) The notion of using real business principals and business drivers for the best results is also an important issue. 3.) Sustainability." There's much more...listen now...

Percolated up to a national agenda item
1404_ 7/8/13 -
He is involved with so much and he still has time to hear student concerns. We're talking to Dr. Arlen Meyers, about the CU Program of Bio Innovation and Entrepreneurship, basically a certificate program for graduate level, business, science, engineering, law, health professionals, who are interested in getting an idea to a patient. Dr. Meyers, and CU created the program because there was a gap in providing these students with the business skills needed to find a job. The NSF and the graduate school community has recognized the gap, and finally it's percolated up to a national agenda item. "So", says Arlen, "we have created a program to provide the knowledge, skills, abilities, experience and networks that these people need to interact with industry and get a job." It is Arlen's belief that entrepreneurs need four things to be successful: "They need education; they need experience, networks and they need money, We provide all four in the program." Listen for more about the program and the unique legal and regulatory environment for bio science and health innovation and entrepreneurship. It is probably the most regulated industry in the U.S. Arlen Meyers, MD, MBA, is a professor at the CU School of Medicine, Department of Otolaryngology and he is President/CEO of the Society of Physician Entrepreneurs. Part 4 of 4...

Building better products and faster software with higher quality
1405_ 7/8/13 -
For the past six weeks we've introduced you to some of the interesting folks we met at GlueCon 2013. Here now, meet Navin Thadani, SVP of products for Ravello Systems, an organization based in Palo Alto, California and Israel. This is their first time at Glue and it's been very good for them because they've been able to get the full, broad exposure to a variety of developers working on really interesting projects and technologies. From Ravello's perspective, that's really good because they try to provide the very best kind of development and test lab infrastructure possible. The idea being, developers replicate their applications into the Ravello system where they can create as many problems as they want for rapid development, prototyping and testing. Ravello is a company that is at the intersection of two fields of technology one being virtualization and the other cloud computing. They've built a set of infrastructure that allows them to enable enterprise developers to take their applications exactly as they are, and run that in any cloud - replicate their entire environment, make as many copies as they want and rapidly develop their features and test. Essentially it's about building better products, better software faster and with higher quality.
