Entrepreneurship from Belfast to Belize
1644_ 12/8/14 -
The country and company Susan Morrice is most well known in is Belize. She is the founder and chair of Belize Natural Energy. But also, here in Denver, as the original investor with founder Josh Stewart of XJet, the private jet company. Larry Nelson, w3w3.com, asked Susan what was next for her, she replied, "What I really want to do is to teach people the key educational steps, it's not a secret, behind everyone being as successful as they want to be. To follow their own dreams. The first key is to know yourself! Really get to know how you work. Not the clutter of baggage, not the expectations, but get to know yourself so you can self express in the area that makes you thrive, successful at the business of living." Susan credits Educo, a program she attended 12 years ago, for providing the keys to her success. Today she says, "I don't need more jets, I have enough oil. Now I want to help others to attain their success."

News from Chris Pelley at ACG Denver luncheon - we learned that CIMCO Private Wealth has been acquired by RBC, the Royal Bank of Canada. Larry, w3w3® Media Network, was interviewing Chris at the Business and Social Enterprise Event which was founded and sponsored by CIMCO. Chris explained that CIMCO CARES will continue as a philanthropic entity and hopes to sponsor this event well into the future. Chris said, "To inspire us, set an example. Human beings learn by modeling and as our old mentor, Benjamin Franklin observed, 'Do well by doing good.' And the whole notion is as we have good role models in the corporate world who believe in an entire holistic system, it will spread good news for many people. When I met Susan Morrice, I'd already heard about her success in energy and oil and Xjet and all the rest. But as I got to know her better, I realized she lives and breathes what prosperity and enterprise can mean to everyone..." Photo Album, Storyboard Check it out...

Larry had a discussion with the keynote speaker, Dale Schuster at the ACG Denver monthly luncheon. Dale's career has been centered in the technology field with extensive experience in software application development as well as domestic and international sales and marketing. Dale brings significant experience in global Sales, Marketing, and orchestrating business turn-arounds in a number of business sectors and markets. As President of SteriTec Products Inc., Dale brings a wealth of experience and creativity to the sterility assurance market. The company specializes in thermographic ink technology and has invented whole product categories. This proprietary ink helps users detect problems in the sterilization process before catastrophic failures occur. Today, SteriTec manufactures over 400 unique products sold into 48 countries on five continents.
Their philosophy: One out of every 20 patients experiences a hospital-acquired infection each year. That translates to two million people, 90,000 who will die each year. (That’s more than auto accidents and homicides combined). We believe our technology and products help prevent hospital acquired infections by testing the effectiveness of both the cleaning and sterilizing processes...listen now there's much more...

Tapping into the human resource connections in your market
1608_ 9/15/14 -
Last year 100s of people attended this event and it has been sold out each of the last four years. The format is appreciated by all - there are no speakers, just a lot of time to network and make or renew your contacts. We asked Howard Potter to talk about his networking best practices. Networking should be about 'How can I help you?' You walk into a meeting, the first thing you want to think is, 'What can I do to help these people in the room?' First, try to arrive a minimum of 15 minutes early. Those first minutes are the most important. You can get the ground work going, canvass the room, get a feeling for what's going on. I would also suggest, try to leave 15 minutes late, at the end of the networking time is some of the most valuable time that you spend. After the networking session is over you have to take the cards you've collected, make notes on the cards to remind yourself later of who you met. Talking about business cards - Never, Never, Never be without your business card. Howard Potter, recovering attorney and CPA is the founder (9 years ago) of this Annual Investment & Finance Cross-Networking Event: Don't miss this one, Sept. 17, 2014. Check it out...

Focus on really being good at what you do
1535_ 4/21/14 -
Since the 60s, Bernstein a New York based fund, has been built solely on research based investment management. That singular focus has led them to become one of the biggest companies and one of the biggest public firms in that arena. We're talking with Ward Cerny, Vice President, Bernstein Global Wealth Management and he said, "We've just focused on really being good at what we do and not all the other things that cause conflicts to our investment management clients, such as lending, mergers and acquisitions, having a proprietary trading desk. We just want to focus on ensuring the best outcome for our clients, the fiduciary, and that's what we do." For Ward's part, he is an advisor to individuals, foundations and endowments and in his niche of specialty is "helping business owners, in particular, plan out how their companies and transactions in relation to their companies, is going to benefit them. Transactions like selling a majority or the entirety of their company or buying another company, how is that going to affect them personally? How is it going to affect their goals and help them achieve what they want to get out of their professional lives?" That is quite a tall order. Ward said, "Another hurdle to overcome is most entrepreneurs feel very comfortable taking a ton of risk and having all their eggs in the business basket - just trying to get them to diversify so that their financial future is a lot more secure." Transformational Leadership in a Global Economy(Part 1 of 4)
1527_ 4/7/14 -
Larry and Pat attended the high-profile ACG Denver Rocky Mountain Corporate Growth Conference and talked to a number of attendees about the business timing in the marketplace today. Larry recorded the keynote address General Stanley McChrystal. General Stanley McChrystal is widely admired for his hunger to know the truth, his courage to find it, and his humility to listen to those around him. Even as the commanding officer of all U.S. and coalition forces in Afghanistan, he stationed himself forward and frequently went on patrols with his troops to experience their challenges firsthand. A one-of-a-kind commander with a remarkable record of achievement, General Stan McChrystal is widely praised for creating a revolution in warfare that fused intelligence and operations. He is also known for developing and implementing the counter-insurgency strategy in Afghanistan and for creating a comprehensive counter-terrorism organization that revolutionized the way military agencies interact and operate. His leadership of JSOC is credited with the 2003 capture of Saddam Hussein and the 2006 location and killing of Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the leader of al-Qaeda in Iraq. McChrystal, a former Green Beret, is known for his candor, innovative leadership, and going the distance. Bootstrapping the company and it grows in size and profits 1628_ 10/20/14 - Wynne Odell is Co-founder and CEO of Odell Brewing Company in Fort Collins, Colorado. She was the keynote speaker at the ACG Denver monthly meeting. Doug, Wynne and Corkie Odell started their brewing odyssey in 1989. The trio had no grand plans, but after five years of a draft-only format, bottles were introduced and rapid growth ensued. Twenty-five years later, Odell Brewing Company ranks 34th in size among craft breweries in the United States. Odell is a Colorado-centric company, with 65% of its sales coming from in-state. With the addition of Texas in 2014, it now distributes in 11 states. Doug, Wynne and Corkie, along with three of their children, still remain active at the brewery. A culture of family and collaboration fosters a brewery full of beer-centric people. It is this passion for beer that inspires Odell Brewing to create quality, hand-crafted, innovative brews. As a regional craft brewery, Odell Brewing is also committed to serving the communities in which it distributes by sourcing local raw materials, and through its charitable giving program known as Odell Outreach. Wynne said, "If you can bootstrap and hang on to the ownership of your company as you grow, you have an opportunity to reap all the rewards down the road." Value proposition for both the candidate and client 1582_ 7/14/14 - Traditionally staffing and recruitment firms are transactionaly focused, looking at the outcome only. We're talking with Kathleen Quinn Votaw, CEO, TalenTrust. Kathleen tells us that TalenTrust is often engaged with their clients for 3, 4, 5 years to help them through their growth and to ensure they have the right people in the right place and in a pipeline so that when they need to hire, they're ready to go. So they take a very holistic, sales, trust attitude toward recruitment versus a transactional attitude. In addition everything TalenTrust does for their client is guaranteed 100% for the lifetime of the agreement with them. Given that these relationships are three to five years, this is a huge differentiator in the marketplace. Kathleen really gets involved like ACG Denver where she has served on their board for 12 years and is a past president. She's also a member of Vistage, in one of the CEO groups as well as a sponsor of the organization. "Because", she explains, "we believe in their methodology and how they bring CEOs together to solve bigger picture issues. And Vistage is a group of 15,000 members throughout the globe." Also, you'll find Kathleen heavily involved with Colorado Companies to Watch - having just completed their annual gala with 860 people attending. We also are celebrating CCTW's 6th year with 300 alumni. Kathleen sees a bright future ahead and she continues working to ensure that vision.

"Listen, learn ... then Lead!" Gen. Stanley McChrystal [Part 3 of 4] 1533_ 4/14/14 - "I was raised with traditional stories of leadership: Robert E. Lee, John Buford at Gettysburg. And I also was raised with personal examples of leadership. And I was raised to believe that soldiers were strong and wise and brave and faithful; they didn't lie, cheat, steal or abandon their comrades. And I still believe real leaders are like that. But in my first 25 years of career, I had a bunch of different experiences." After McChrystal graduated from West Point, he was commissioned as an infantry officer, and spent much of his career commanding special operations and airborne infantry units. During the Persian Gulf War, McChrystal served in a Joint Special Operations Task Force and later commanded the 75th Ranger Regiment. He completed year-long fellowships at Harvard’s John F. Kennedy School of Government in 1997 and in 2000 at the Council on Foreign Relations. In 2002, he was appointed chief of staff of military operations in Afghanistan. Two years later, McChrystal was selected to deliver nationally televised Pentagon briefings about military operations in Iraq. From 2003 to 2008, McChrystal commanded JSOC and was responsible for leading the nation’s deployed military counter-terrorism efforts around the globe. He assumed command of all International Forces in Afghanistan in June 2009. President Obama’s order for an additional 30,000 troops to Afghanistan was based on McChrystal’s assessment of the war there. McChrystal retired from the military in August 2010. The McChrystal Group... [Part 4 of 4] 1534_ 4/14/14 - The thought that the consulting world is ripe for disruption has been floated before – and the change is happening in many parts of the industry. The common complaints about consulting suggest the direction that the industry is moving: consultants drop a thick report on the table that never gets read; their solutions generate additional problems; they look at questions or problems too narrowly to have a sustainable business impact. The McChrystal Group is a niche consulting firm that partners with companies going through the same change process that we experienced during a decade of combat. "We’re working with leaders who acknowledge that in today’s environment, things simply move too fast for one-off solutions to keep pace." CrossLead (McChrystal Group) is a leadership philosophy that empowers organizations to achieve beyond optimal results through constant adaptation. We believe that the world has changed. We believe that the hierarchies that dominated the 20th century will not suffice in the information age. We live in a networked, fast-paced era. Organizations must embrace a fundamental shift from efficiency to adaptability.. "I came to believe that a leader isn't good because they're right; they're good because they're willing to learn and to trust. This isn't easy stuff. And it isn't always fair. You can get knocked down, and it hurts and it leaves scars. But if you're a leader, the people you've counted on will help you up. And if you're a leader, the people who count on you need you on your feet." Creating a greater presence with marketing 1537_ 4/21/14 - While at the Rocky Mtn. Corporate Growth Conference, we had an opportunity to sit down with Rob Gower, marketing director at Advoda. Rob tells us that Advoda is a very unique company in that it's been around for 12 years, a completely debt free company and doing very well. This company has grown to the size it has, with the reputation it has and we are very well known within the industry and very well liked. This was accomplished without marketing, quite a testament to a full service IT and telecommunications master agency. Lots of people assume, when you talk about IT or telecom that you have a very specific product which you provide. The difference with Advoda is they work with over 50 carriers and service providers and take a consultative approach to evaluate the service requirements and align them with carrier offerings and present the ideal solution available in the marketplace. They find the best fit for you. For example if company A provides the best cable service and company B provides the best cloud service, that's what Advoda is going to give you rather than just going with one or the other. Rob proudly offers, "the best value proposition we offer is you can actually speak directly to us" no automated answering - and they do all the project management. Larry attended a high-profile ACG Denver luncheon and talked to a number of attendees about the business timing in the marketplace today. Larry interviewed Nate Oatman, ACG Denver Board Member, with Capital Value Advisors, an investment bank - a boutique bank based here in Denver, Colorado. Nate's firm works with middle market, privately held businesses, primarily helping them execute a transaction when it's appropriate, but also working with them multiple years in advance. And, they've been doing this for over ten years. Larry asked what the biggest challenges are facing us in the next years.
Nate replied, "I would say there's a bit of a longer term uncertainty out there. I think a lot of our clients current and prospects, are trying to figure out, do they want to reload and go for the next level of growth or do they want to partner with someone else to do that. Or, are they ready to potentially exit and move on to a next chapter. So I think that is a challenge of 'hey we've recovered, the economy is doing very well', from our perspective, right now. But you know good business owners are always looking 3 to 5 years out. So I would say that's one challenge and the other is time. Right. Everyone we work with, and being a boutique outfit, we are very selective on who we work with and so that's always a challenge and we notice with our really strong clients, they're always searching for more time to achieve their goals." Larry asked, you're on the board at ACG, give us an overview of what you have coming up. "ACG is great, we've got our Corporate Growth Conference on April 1st where we anticipate getting about 500 business advisors, intermediaries, private equity groups, investment bankers, lawyers - so they'll be getting together and"...

Bringing the ideas, the people and the capital together
1515_ 3/17/14 -
The Association for Corporate Growth is an international organization based out of Chicago. Ward Cerny is president of the ACG Denver Chapter and Vice President of Bernstein Global Wealth Management here in Denver. "We have about 500 ACG Denver members, they span the gamut - corporate heads, professionals in the business community, private equity and investment bankers and we're placed with the premiere middle market organization for bringing the ideas, the people and the capital together when people need to grow their business. And so that's what we do, we provide the content, the meeting place over a nice lunch, dinner or breakfast, so that people can get the resources and advice they need to grow their business." On April 1st, we're having our Annual Rocky Mountain Corporate Growth Conference with General Stanley McChrystal as our Keynote speaker Former Commander of U.S. and International Forces in Afghanistan, will present his ‘Lessons in Leadership’. Larry asked what advice Ward would have for a potential investor. "I would say don't get overly excited, and in the depths of despair, try not to act out of fear. Keep the long run in mind, have a plan from the start and make sure as the valuations go down and everything is on sale that you don't sell at the worst time possible. Then as valuations go up to very high levels, don't get overly exuberant. Don't buy at a high market as well." Ward continued, "Our business is focused on, the only way to have superior results over the long run is to invest in research - over and over again. To make sure you have superior research, superior ideas and that's what will generate superior results." Even as Ward is an MBA in Finance and has worked in investment banking for a long time, "We have a deep bench of analysts around the world and they are really qualified in what they do - and the sum of all that research is what makes us the great institution that we are."

Fiscal Reality from One of the country’s most informed economists
1486_ 1/13/14 -
For a little shot of reality, we are talking with Alan Beaulieu during his annual economic forecast at the ACG Denver 2014 Opening Luncheon. (Note: We've interviewed Alan several times over the years - be sure to check out his view of the future then and now.) ITR Economics focuses on the U.S. and European economy with offices here and there. Today Alan is talking about fiscal reality, a refreshing look at life as it is. "We started with the Affordable Health Care Act. You may be hearing the administration saying because of Obama Care they have slowed down the rate of rise in healthcare - you'll be seeing headlines about that in numerous sources. Keep in mind that it is a very negligible change and the numbers they're citing are before the healthcare act really came into being, 2014 is the real year of the healthcare act. So the slowdown really has to do with the softness we had in the economy in 2013 than it does with anything else, just a normal part of the economy. We think the healthcare act could be a headwind for consumers if the administration is right and millions of healthy young individuals go to the exchange." One of the country’s most informed economists, Alan Beaulieu, is a principal of ITR Economics™ where he serves as President. He leads the company’s European office and serves as chief economist for numerous U.S. and European trade associations. He is co-author of Make Your Move, a book on profiting in business cycle changes, and is a contributing editor for Industry Week magazine...Listen for more...

Waste is a waste of resources - Greenology 1499_ 2/10/14 - Here is a Colorado success story driving sustainability solutions in the food service packaging industry. This movement of 'zero waste' is effectively trying to say, 'how do we take things that used to go to the trash and recycle them or compost them so we're minimizing the amount that goes to the landfill?' Ian Jacobson, COO/CFO of Eco-Products deals with institutions that have to take care of their own waste, think of restaurants or restaurant like operators whether that's caterers or anyone who sets the table... a hotel, university or at stadiums as well. Boulder has been the leader in this movement going way back. Boulder is a remarkable business community. Larry asked, what's coming down the road? "Increasingly this concept of 'zero waste'. Look at Google Trends and you can see how that is building over time. This movement is changing the way universities are operating - it's changing the way stadiums are operating." Of course, we have to give a shout out to Ed von Bleichert, manager of the CU Boulder Environmental Operations, Department of Facilities Management . Ed is constantly being called out to universities around the country to lend his expertise and he'll be speaking for Ian's organization later this month in Florida. Ian points out that CU Folsom field is already effectively a Zero Waste Zone, moving as much as they can to compost or recycling. We're hoping to see the major league sports here follow suit, the way they have in Seattle or San Francisco. Some of these other emerging markets for waste diversion are really setting the tone in terms of what is capable. We see that coming here to Denver next.
