Dedicated Receptionist - No annual salary
1673_ 2/9/15 -
When we last spoke with Dave Milliken, he preached the pending rise of investment crowdfunding. That vision has become a reality. Now Dave, co-founder of MyGreetly.com is passionate about making your company’s reception area more efficient. Businesses today have automated many vital tasks – even creative jobs like marketing – but not the reception area. Gone are the dedicated receptionists. In its place you may find an office manager juggling three jobs or perhaps just an empty desk. Yet your reception area is how you greet your customers, vendors and prospective employees. Dave says, "Don’t burden your visitors and the nearest employee." Larry asked Dave what motivated his passion for developing this product. We learned Dave's experience over the years as an employee and as an entrepreneur, of walking into so many offices, over and again, walking aimlessly around, disturbing other employees, looking for his appointment. He couldn't imagine a company allowing their employees to be distracted…There’s much more, listen for more!

Create a team of people who will lead the company forward
1669_ 2/2/15 -
Larry asks, "Jana, the question is this, what are the types of things that you deliver and pass along to the people you're working with?" Jana: "It was so helpful that I developed what we call the 'Great Knowledge Framework'. The first thing is to help people understand there is a commonality to growth. So, one is to give them a framework - what is it you need to know to grow. Second, is to give them comfort, things they're experiencing are not idiosyncratic to them. It's a part of the normal growth process. Third is we actually create a team of people who will lead the company forward, instead of thinking it's all about the entrepreneur knowing everything." Knowing that Jana has worked with universities here in the U.S. etc., we asked about the differences she's noticed in Australia. Currently, Jana is at the University of South Australia. Larry, "What are some of the business types of things you're running into in Adelaide?" Jana said, "Interesting, all the things that Brad Feld talks about, in terms of an entrepreneurial ecosystem, are playing out in spades." Listen for more!

Building business from Boulder to Australia 1665_ 1/26/15 - It's been a few years, but we're catching up with Jana Matthews, the roving professor/consultant, advisor to high level powerful business leaders. We first met Jana in Boulder, "You did, I had moved back to Boulder after spending ten years at the Kauffman Foundation doing some of the original work on what entrepreneurs needed to know to grow companies, how do they learn it and how do we package that in the most efficient way for them to learn it quicker." Larry remembered that was where Jana met Brad Feld. "Yes, Brad worked with me at Kauffman and we've been friends quite a long time. Of course he's here in Boulder and I've been in Boulder doing quite a lot of work but, as you say, international as well." Now Jana is spending most of her time in Adelaide, Australia where she is helping them understand how to grow companies. Jana said, "I've just accepted... Developing client-centered lodging solutions in various markets
1670_ 2/9/15 -
At the ACG Denver luncheon, Larry interviewed the keynote speaker, Tom Atchison who is a long-time hospitality professional with extensive sales and operations experience in apartment management, furnished apartments and the corporate housing industries. As current CEO of National Corporate Housing, he is focused on developing client-centered lodging solutions in various market segments including leisure travel, project related, training, government and relocation. In addition to developing tailored solutions for clients, his primary goal is managing a team to provide the most responsive and friendly customer service in the furnished apartment industry. Corporate housing is defined as a furnished residential apartment, house, or condominium made available for rent on a short-term basis, primarily for 30 days or more. Corporate housing is typically located within apartment communities and includes furniture, a full kitchen, a private bath, linens, house wares, electronics, and utilities. Professional, trustworthy companies like National Corporate Housing manage all the details for a client, usually at one inclusive cost. Listen for more…

If you're ready to sell your business
1666_ 2/2/15 -
Larry interviewed Kelly Quann Bianucci, Managing Principal, Discover Capital. Kelly launched a 'Search Fund' in June of 2014. Now a 'search fund' is basically an entity that converges entrepreneurship with private equity. So, it's a chance for an entrepreneur/operator who wants to build a business to buy and build a business as opposed to say starting one from scratch. The way a search fund works is you raise a fund up front and secure a committed investor base so that you can then go out into the market and find a great company and then take that back to your investors. If you're ready to sell your business or thinking about it, Kelly says, the first step would be to engage with an exit strategy coach. There are a lot of exit strategy coaches in the area that can help you make a plan to sell your company. Because typically it's not…Listen, there’s much more…

The technology business is cyclical, like all industries
1668_ 2/2/15 -
As we continue with part 2 of Ryan McIntyre's interview he explains the current 'frothy funding environment' that we are seeing. "The enthusiasm behind today's batch of startups and growing companies is, in many ways, more warranted by actual numbers than it was in the first Internet boom. I think that explains the frothy funding environment. We've seen it ourselves, within our portfolio, which is the time between a company's starting, launching a product and getting to a revenue growth phase has really compressed over time. And companies are able to do it while investing less up front. So that, I think is one of the reasons for this current high amount of energy and level of investment happening in the early stage market." With that in mind, Ryan reminds us that the technology business is cyclical, like all industries, so he isn't "foolish enough to say this time is different" ...there's much more...

Venture Investments at Highest Level Since the Internet Bubble
1663_ 1/26/15 -
Larry is talking with our friend Ryan McIntyre, Managing Director at the Foundry Group, and Larry wanted to get Ryan's take on the economic future. But Ryan tells us as a venture capitalist who works in the technology industry and specifically in the very early stage startups, they don't spend much time at all focusing on the macroeconomic environment. Ryan's involvement in a company comes when it's a couple of people and an idea through hopefully an acquisition or an IPO, a success case. But, he says, "We are by no means public market investors, we are not macro economists, we don't spend a lot of time focusing on what the current state of the economy is. Partially because that is not our area of expertise and we've found over the past number of years that the venture business, particularly very early stage is pretty uncorrelated with the macroeconomic environment..."
