Test those ideas very rapidly, before you build anything! 1621_ 10/6/14 - Vice President of Operations at TechStars in Boulder, Daniel Feld is a natural for the organization, born and bred in an entrepreneurial family environment. Larry asked what are some of the first things one should do when building a company? Daniel replied, "I think most important for an entrepreneur is to find a problem that they are deeply passionate about solving. And, to test that idea very, very quickly to make sure it's a problem worth solving. That someone's willing to pay for the solution and that the pain is real. Sometimes, we as entrepreneurs like to make up what we believe to be a problem. And then we get so enamored with the solution that we are blinded by our own passion for it without validating that there's a real need out there. One of the things that's become a lot easier for people to do and encouraged through programs like TechStars and other methodologies, is to test those ideas very rapidly, before you build anything. So go talk to your potential customers. Find them very quickly and find out if the pain is truly shared and worth solving." Mash up of people, different viewpoints and ideas
1610_ 9/22/14 -
The ATLAS Institute at CU Boulder, over the years, has evolved and Jill Dupre, Associate Director said, "...it continues to evolve. A constant is that we are a home for 'creative trouble makers'. We're a home for intrepid inventors, people who want to change the future! ATLAS is interdisciplinary - we work with people from all over campus." ATLAS is housed within Engineering but their faculty and students come from all over, from arts, theater, English, journalism, business, engineering, computer sciences, law... At ATLAS, they like the kind of ideas that come from that intersection and that mash up of people, different viewpoints and ideas. ATLAS Institute's belief is that combining that mix in a creative way and in a fun environment is how you change your world and how you make it better. Of course, it's not all fun and games. ATLAS has three core academic programs. At the undergrad level; technology, arts and media - that promotes creative work and research and information technology and digital media in an interdisciplinary environment.

Forbes Top 20 Universities for Entrepreneurship List... CU-Boulder
1607_ 9/15/14 -
"The Entrepreneurship Initiative is entering its seventh year - an interesting trajectory for us in terms of what we've done around entrepreneurship in particular. And, this is year 15 for Silicon Flatirons overall, and of course, Phil Weiser the Executive Director and Dean of the Law School" pointed out Brad Bernthal Clinical Professor of Law at CU Law School and the Entrepreneurship Initiative Director for Silicon Flatirons Center. Brad said they got a real shot in the arm this summer, Forbes listed the top 20 universities for entrepreneurship and CU Boulder was ranked in that top 20..."There is much discussion about, 'what would it look like for us to truly be a Top Five public university for entrepreneurship... We've done two things right, one missing. We've brought the innovation community to the campus on a regular basis. Silicon Flatirons did over 40 events last year that had an entrepreneurship orientation, over 6000 attendees - a high velocity of interaction between campus and community. Second, our students across the campus are engaged. We have the New Venture Challenge that's for anyone with a CU ID - faculty, staff, student from any discipline across campus. Anybody can get involved, we will help them build a business; we'll give them mentors who are the best and brightest in the community...

The biggest challenge to an entrepreneur today[Part 2 of 2] 1610_ 9/22/14 - What is the biggest challenge to an entrepreneur today? Larry asked our expert Brad Bernthal, Director of the Entrepreneurial Initiative, Silicon Flatiron Center and Clinical Law Professor, CU Boulder - Law School. His reply... "The biggest challenge I'm seeing today, is often competing with the noise. So, in broad strokes, the democratization of entrepreneurship in just the last ten years has been amazing. The fact that, especially in Information Technology, startup costs have dropped so dramatically, has leveled the playing field. That's a great thing in terms of giving innovation opportunities to a wider group of entrepreneurs. But, I think it also introduces a lot of noise into the system. In terms of competition for angel funding, but especially venture capital funding and most importantly market share. Getting attention, showing traction, it's always been a challenge, but I think it may be even more challenging today." And, we couldn't be more proud and humbled to hear Brad as he gives a shout-out to w3w3.com "If you look back over the 15 years of Silicon Flatirons, nobody has been more present at events and getting the word out and doing the kind of community building that you do Larry, than w3w3 - So thanks for all you've done to build the entrepreneurship scene!" ...There's more... As a classic basement startup, New Belgium's beginnings were entrepreneurial; it's now the third largest craft brewery and the first brewery in the United States to specialize in Belgian style beers. New Belgium is known for its commitment to environmental stewardship, and under Kim Jordan's leadership, they have developed a set of interwoven practices that include employee ownership, high involvement culture, advocacy and of course drinking beer together. In January of 2013 New Belgium announced the sale of 100 per cent of the brewery to its 475 co-workers. This enabled the formation of a family foundation with a goal of creating a new business model. Ms. Jordan and New Belgium have been widely recognized as business role models; she received the EPA's highest regional award for Environmental Excellence and in 2012 was Entrepreneur Magazine's CEO of the Year and CEO of the year by Colorado Biz Magazine. New Belgium was voted in the top ten best places to work by Outside Magazine, Men's Journal, and The Wall Street Journal...see the great event photos...

SLIDESHOW
1589_ 7/28/14 - 903_10/4/10- Larry sat down with Brad Feld, managing partner of Foundry Group to talk about an exciting announcement. Larry began the interview with, "You know there are a lot of powerful words out there, and three of them are Do, More, Faster, do you have any comments to make on them?"
With a chuckle, Brad said, "Good setup! Do More Faster is the title of a book that David Cohen, the founder of TechStars, and Brad Feld have written." By strange coincidence, this is Monday, October 4th, the publication date! The origin of the book was a phrase thrown around TechStars, Do more faster. If you're not familiar with TechStars, it is a mentor driven accelerator, started in Boulder four years ago. It's a 90 day program, usually 10 companies, usually 25 to 30 entrepreneurs go through the program, full time, extremely immersive. They have about 50 mentors, experienced entrepreneurs that work with them along with those of us in the program. They get a small amount of seed financing at the front end of the program. About a year ago David and Brad sat down and talked about a way they could codify some of the things that they've learned. They settled pretty quickly on having the mentors and entrepreneurs involved in helping create the book. "We looked around and there aren't many books written by entrepreneurs, especially first time entrepreneurs about the experiences they've had creating companies. We then organized the chapters around usually one line phrases like 'do more faster' that have come out of the last four years of running TechStars that David and I sat down and put together with some other people. Then we had a bunch of people write first drafts about which we spent a lot of time on and then David and I organized the book and put some connective tissue between the essays. So very experiential, lots of details from the founders, from the entrepreneur’s perspective, from the mentor’s perspective, about specific things that all entrepreneurs could use, but especially first-time entrepreneurs or perspective entrepreneurs. We were on the verge of self publishing and we got introduced to some folks at Wiley and they took that book on. They were incredibly helpful."...There's more... Manages four companies including a family foundation 1585_ 7/21/14 - This is a great entrepreneur's story. Starting with fourth generation owner/president and EY Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist/Winner 2014, Kristy Taddonio Mullins of Mile Hi Foods. In 1901 Kristy's great grandfather Michael Taddonio arrived in the U.S from Italy and worked as a peddler in Denver selling fruits and vegetables door-to-door. His sons took over operating from their father's garage as Taddonio Brother's produce business. In 1956 the first McDonalds opened in Denver and mile Hi Fruit & Vegetable's was awarded the potato contract. As McDonald's grew so did Mile Hi Fruit & Vegetable. In 1968 grandson Tony Taddonio (Kristy's father) joined the firm and became the sole owner of the company, today known as Mile Hi Foods. In 1973 Tony and his wife Pam created TMT Trucking, a contract carrier with a 48 state authority for interstate transportation. By 1985 they had added a bakery to produce all of the buns used by McDonald's in the Rocky Mountain Region and now supply baked goods for Red Robin, Wingers, Good Times, King Soopers, Wendy's and Famous Dave's. Really exciting and a life saving development
1583_ 7/14/14 -
We begin with an overview of Yulex Corp, speaking with the founder and CEO, Jeff Martin. This is really exciting and a life saving development for people suffering from a latex allergy. A lot of people don't know the U.S. has been 100% dependent on imports of natural rubber. Ninety percent of all the natural rubber in the world comes from southeast Asia, and there are sever allergy problems with the tropical latex that comes from southeast Asia. It's been a problem for a very long time. Yulex Corp has developed a new source of botanical rubber. Jeff said, "What we've done is taken a wild crop, namely Yule ('y-u-lee'), which is indigenous to Mexico, and brought it into Arizona. We've domesticated the crop and developed a process to extract natural rubber from this wild plant. We built a factory in Phoenix where we extract and refine the rubber and sell it into the medical and consumer product industries. Basically it's the emergence of a natural rubber business for the United States." Jeff also told us that they are providing this natural rubber latex for the medical industry where Latex allergy is a severe problem. It just so happens that the domestic latex that we grow here in the United States is non-allergenic. So we're gearing up for medical gloves, surgical gloves, condoms, catheters- for people who have a latex allergy. The best advice Jeff ever received was from another EY Entrepreneur of the Year (Florida, 20 years ago) who happened to be Jeff's boss. He said, "It's easier to knock things down than to knock things in. Don't be SNIOP - and to be SNIOPed is to be Susceptible to the Negative Influences of Other People. So listen to your own heart and move forward."

Kevin brings a strong history of software operations, strategy, capital fundraising, and mergers and acquisitions to BeyondTrust, where he is responsible for the company’s day to day operations. Kevin joined BeyondTrust by way of the company’s acquisition of eEye Digital Security, where he served as CEO and Chairman. Under Kevin’s leadership, eEye experienced significant growth, launched several 'market-first' security solutions and brought the company back to category leadership. Larry asked what advice Kevin would give to an entrepreneur. Kevin said, "One is that it is all about people. Find good people, nurture them and make sure they feel part of the fabric of the organization. Two is extreme clarity. To me, anything you have in your company, if you make it extremely clear as to what the expectations are, it really helps because everyone understands, and then let people run. One of the things I've heard over again in my career is, 'it's not what you preach, it's what you tolerate'. So those are some of the things I've picked up and would like to share with folks. Entrepreneurs worldwide make a difference 1566_ 6/16/14 - Entrepreneurs make a difference. They not only have great ideas, but also the drive to make them a reality. They use their fresh thinking and hard work to create positive social change – bringing new concepts and products to market, and creating jobs and wealth. EY's commitment to entrepreneurial companies, in both emerging and developed economies around the world, helps ensure that we’re working with more of tomorrow’s global leaders, today. The Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards program was started to celebrate successful entrepreneurs, so they could share their stories, inspire others and receive the recognition they deserve. That first program took place in 1986 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. By 1987 it was held across 11 US cities. And in 1993 the program started to expand internationally. Today the program spans more than 140 cities in 50 countries, which together represent more than 90% of the global economy. Over the past five years, more than 6,500 entrepreneurs joined the Entrepreneur Of The Year alumni. A “who’s who” of both developed and emerging markets, these alumni include many household names. Over half of today’s top 100 NASDAQ companies have won Entrepreneur Of The Year, and most received the award before they achieved top 100 status. Ten years ago EY decided to go global and started World Entrepreneur Of The Year. Held annually in Monaco, Entrepreneur Of The Year country winners compete for the World Entrepreneur Of The Year title. They are also looking for companies that can have national or worldwide reach. You get $118,000 in seed investment upon acceptance into Techstars for 7-10% equity in your company. This is part 2 of Larry's interview with David Brown, President, TechStars. Larry asked, "A group, a startup, they think they should get involved with TechStars, what should they be doing?" David replied, "They should go to www.TechStars.com/apply, that is our gateway to getting into the program. There's a comprehensive questionnaire there that allows us to get to know you pretty quickly as individuals and your idea to get to market, your product and from that process we select approximately ten companies from each of the thirteen locations to go through this 3 month program that then culminates in DemoDay. When we started back in 2008 we brought in a lot of mentors to provide advice the companies. And I think one of the things we've learned over the years is there is so much more to it than that. Although it's great to provide advice and it's great to provide investors at DemoDay to fund the companies, there is a real network effect here. There are 400 companies that have graduated, 1200 founders, 1200 or so mentors in the system, investors"...listen for more ...David's latest book is 'No Vision All Drive'...

When the chips are down, Michael Bristow says, "
Keep at it, eventually there will be a turn around."
1599_ 8/11/14 - [archives/2011-01-13]
ARCA Biopharma, Inc. is a Colorado-based biopharmaceutical company developing genetically-targeted therapies for heart failure and other cardiovascular diseases. Larry interviewed Michael R. Bristow, MD, Ph.D. CEO & Chief Science and Medical Officer of ARCA, at the CU Technology Transfer Office Awards banquet. For years, Dr. Bristow has been a favorite interview for w3w3®. Larry asked, "Michael what are the biggest changes you've seen in this last year in your industry?" He replied, "It's been a couple of tough years, but I think things are starting to turn around and basically the atmospherics have gotten a lot better. Just coming off a JP Morgan meeting, it was, I thought, a completely different tone this year." Dr. Bristow had some interesting insights about funding. "Well, it's sort of like financing of real estate was back in the early 80s when interest rates were 20% - you've got to do creative financing. So, all kinds of vehicles have been used through this period. ARCA biopharma, for instance did a reverse merger, bought a company that was NASDAQ listed, that had a bunch of cash - that proved to be a good move. So people have gotten through this one way or another. But we need to get back to traditional sources of funding." Larry asked, "Is there any particular advice to people in your arena?" Spoken like a true leader he replied, "Yes, don't give up. I mean, tenacity! Keep at it, eventually there will be a turn around. Now, when things aren't going too well, may be the best opportunity there is in terms of acquiring assets. Think ahead. Think positive." Dr. Bristow joined ARCA as one of ARCA’s founders in September 2004, and has served as Chairman and Chief Science and Medical Officer of ARCA until he was appointed to his current position of Chief Executive Officer in July 2009. Dr. Bristow is a Professor of Medicine and the former Head of Cardiology at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where he has been since October 1991. Dr. Bristow was one of the founders of Myogen, Inc.

Surefire’s infusion systems are designed to precisely deliver embolic agents through a unique micro catheter with an expandable tip that collapses in forward flow and dynamically expands to the vessel wall in reverse flow in order to increase targeted delivery, minimize reflux and reduce damage to healthy tissue. Building the system and getting the companies commercialized
1584_ 7/14/14 -
EY Entrepreneur Finalist Jeff Pruitt is founding partner and CEO of Tallwave a venture development and venture capital firm. Jeff said they've connected a consulting firm, sleeves-rolled-up, hands-on, taking companies through the validation process, creating product / market fit and then actually commercializing companies on one side of the business - the venture capital on the other side. We have an $18 million seed fund. They work hand-in-hand on getting software-as-a-service and digital marketing companies through that crucial period of time where you're beyond concept but you're having to go commercialize something to get in the market. While venture capital is behind the success of so many companies, Jeff says, "It's more than capital - it is understanding the market. And, before you go and deploy capital, understanding where you're going to point your company; where the market is, how you're going to market it. But then early enough on, user interface, building the product, building the system, building the sales system and getting these companies commercialized - and that's a very crucial point. If you can get funded at the time they need funding but also able to deploy, getting the company into market, that timing really changes the ratio of successful companies..." Listen for more...

The relationship between Sci-Fi and entrepreneurship
1522_ 3/24/14 -
Our Silicon Flatirons Center's 2014 Entrepreneurship Conference, on the afternoon of March 14th, 2014, analyzed the relationship between Sci-Fi and entrepreneurship. Sci-Fi writers and entrepreneurs both innovate to "create the future." Looking at the relationships, similarities and synergies between the two disciplines, the Conference's discussion focused on three primary topics. First, to explore what entrepreneurs and innovators have learned from science fiction and what science fiction might suggest about the entrepreneurial opportunities ahead. The Conference then discussed the potential ethical cautions that science fiction can provide and the role of entrepreneurs and the government in being attentive to these ethical concerns. Finally, focusing on the process of creation that occurs during entrepreneurial innovation and the construction of science fiction, how the processes are similar or different, and what the two crafts can learn from each other.

LISTEN: Industry Briefing and High Tech Session Recap 1561_ 6/9/14 - We are at the CTA Industry Briefing & Legislative Session Celebration speaking with JB Holston, Chairman, Sitrion and Co-Chair of CTA's Public Policy Committee to talk about the legislative session and CTA's public policy efforts in general. JB said their committee got together about a year ago and decided to make some changes to effect better results from their efforts. They began by "...identifying the key issues we wanted to talk about well ahead of the next legislative session and the other thing was to start developing relationships with the legislators so that as the session started we could have conversations with folks that knew us, we'd gone to lunch with, had coffee with, talked about some of these issues informally with. That was a big change in the way CTA had been involved in the legislative process and I think it paid big dividends this year." The other speakers were: Erik Mitisek, CEO, CTA; Bill Mueldener, Principal, Hein & Associates; Annette Quintana, CEO, Istonish; Roberta Robinette, President-Colorado, AT&T; Sandra Solin, President and CEO, Capitol Solutions; Nissa Szabo, Industry Affairs Manager, CTA...Listen for more interesting details of this hugely successful public policy committee's work during this legislative session. Financial capital, angel investors, institutional venture capitalists 1472_ 12/2/13 - With a 16 year career - and a lot of startup, building and exiting experience, Jim Deters, the founder / managing director of Galvanize wanted to build a platform that basically solved a lot of the problems he had encountered when building his own companies. The problems really revolved around three things, having a flexible workspace and having like minded people around, it was having and finding more human capital - more software engineers, more great talent to add to his team and of course, finding the financial capital, angel investors or institutional venture capitalists to invest in a new company. So basically, Jim said, "We put all of those under one roof here at Galvanize to coalesce with ecosystems on those three big problems." Summarizing, the three big C's, as they say at Galvanize, are Community, Capital and Curriculum... oh, and they've added Coffee to that list. Larry asked, "How do you recruit companies for this space?" So they opened October 22, 2012 - moved in with 17 companies and from that nucleus they now have about 150 companies... listen for more... Such a surprise, the rewards, and inspiration that came out of the process was awesome and gratifying. Seeing these other entrepreneurs, their passion and the work they've done building their companies was amazing and gave Mike more inspiration to go on.
