Brace yourself for the HCI Revolution...
1323_ 12/3/12 -
Here at Defrag/Blur Conference 2012, we are talking with the director of the IDIA Lab, aka, the Institute for Digital Intermedia Arts at Ball State University, and keynote speaker here at the Blur Conference, John Filwalk. We asked for an overview of what the IDIA Lab does. "IDIA is an interdisciplinary lab at the University. We work with architects and computer scientists, artists and designers - basically on 3D simulation of virtual reality projects." They do a combination of working with screen based technologies - something you would work with on computer. But also we are working with some technologies where you actually wear a headset and some more immersive virtual reality, like you've seen in the movies - that sort of thing. John says one of the things they're investigating is making it more scalable and accessible. "So, we're working with a couple of game engines, mainly the ones that we're most excited by are the ones that actually work with standard Internet browsers / web browsers. So that way the accessibility and being able to be immersed in the virtual worlds is much easier." John said, "We live in a 3D world and we find it makes more sense to be able to take information when you're teaching/learning, training, things like that, and have them happen in a three dimensional space as well. We're used to working in two dimensional space but even though we're used to it, it is more abstract to us then something like this where we are sitting at a table right now. We understand that spatially and that's a very different type of engagement. The truth is that we stand on the verge of a major revolution in the models of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). A revolution that will fly right past academic and into a world of retail, medical, gaming, military, public event, sporting, personal and marketing applications. From multi-touch to motion capture to spatial operating environments, over the next 10 years, everything we know about HCI will change." There's more...

The new breed of professional business woman
1291_ 10/8/12 -
Have you heard about the new breed of professional business woman? Well, we're talking with Wendy Bohling of Boulder/Denver Moxie. Wendy has partnered with Melodie Reagan as MoxieExecs in the 20th chapter of the nationwide Moxie Exchange Movement. "Moxie is a leadership and professional development program designed to meet the needs and accelerate the learning and growth of highly talented women." Wendy and Melodie have each had successful, hard won careers. They've been isolated in a male dominated world, where it took tenacity, developing confidence in your own abilities and Wendy says, you come into that situation as a woman, wanting to be valued and that you are seen for what you bring to the situation, not always what you look like. Today women are looking for culture as much as they're looking for interesting work, and they're having a hard time finding it. Moxie was started a few years ago by Maureen Boyt who has started lots of businesses, but she also was really good at developing mastermind groups that helped businesses get to the next level. She saw the lack, the void of doing that for women. Moxie is that intentional organization to grow the next set of women leaders. Both those that exist today and, to grow the next set of women leaders that are now 10-18 years old, it's called the Go Girl Initiative. Moxie is all about building a community or tribe of successful women. Men have done this over time, in fact you hear men talking all the time; 'How'd you get that job?' Well you know Joe, I worked with him there and he...Listen for more details...

Their focus is to help women up their game
1284_ 9/24/12 - We're talking with a serial entrepreneur, one who has had a very successful career in the corporate culture, and who is also very involved in the community. We're talking with Melodie Reagan. Melodie doesn't just lend her presence and expertise - she get's right in the mix, takes her gloves off and makes a difference. You may remember her tenure as president of TiE Rockies, she founded the Women's Business Executive Network and has a passion for promoting women. Why Moxie Exchange? The reason she loves Moxie is because it's structured and its focus is to help women up their game. It's creating a community between women leaders that are out there, so it's very different in that regard. The other thing that Melodie wants to highlight, because it's really important, is that business really needs women leaders more than ever. Today we're talking about the new Moxie Exchange Movement, a professional organization for women. "Fundamentally it is where business and the women you know collide", said Melodie. It is very unique in that it's not just a networking group - it really is a mastermind organization for women. On top of being a mastermind organization, it gives its members a board of advisors, it also provides you with coaching and new learning. So this is a professional organization for women who want to take their game to a new level - they want to learn. There's more... RELATED LINKS:

Fire disaster financial relief for businesses
1262_ 8/20/12 -
The SBDC Network, that's Small Business Development Center Network has 14 hubs throughout Colorado, they conduct regular training events and services to help small businesses grow and prosper. With the recent disastrous effects of the fires in our state this season, Kelly Manning, State Director for SBDC Network said, "It's really a sad thing. With all the media attention about the fires in Colorado. You know a lot of businesses were not affected physically by those fires but it did effect them financially. The media puts on all the pictures and it looks like the entire state is on fire. The reality of it was, unfortunately a lot of homes were destroyed, but not a lot of businesses. But people stopped coming to Colorado. We had cancellations from Aspen to Vail, wanting to know how close the fires were to them - canceling hotel reservations, restaurants were affected. So, truly a lot of businesses were affected by these fires. With that the SBDC has been stepping up from day one. Fortunately Colorado was blessed with a $100,000 grant from our federal partners, SBA, to provide consulting for businesses that were affected. With that we will bringing on consultants that will help with loan packaging for the disaster loans and also some people need lines of credit to be able to get over a hump to get them back on track where they were. The Colorado SBDC Network is here to help those businesses pick up the pieces and clear the way through the ashes of their disasters. SBDC Network is here for the long haul to help those businesses get back up on their feet and be more successful than they were before." ... LISTEN for more!

Subject Line Text (or Lack of It) Drives Nelson Nuts

Unwanted email is bad enough. How do you like to receive emails that have nothing, nada, zero on the Subject Line? That tugs on Larry Nelson’s nervous system. But just as annoying are people who use an [unrelated] 3-month old email, return it to you with the old Subject Line but a completely different topic. Larry recorded this short but poinant video three years ago in the Broadband Video studio. Since w3w3.com has grown since then and there still is a BIG need for these thoughts, we thought we should run it again. Enjoy his two-minute rant.

In ten years we will have robots capable of helping us in our homes 1265_ 8/20/12 - Can you believe, in ten years we will have robots capable of helping us in our homes. This is amazing and Dr. Louise F. Gunderson, President and CEO of Gamma Two Robotics is here to tell us about the current state of robotics. Louise started out by giving us an overview of Gamma Two, a small robotics company formed by 'two escaped academics' Louise and James Gunderson. “We are building a security robot that will be launched next month that will do a security patrol without a human operating it. Given an area to patrol and directions from you, and carrying a camera, the robot goes around obstacles by itself. If there is a blocked route, it will tell you its route is blocked and it will go on and continue its business. The interesting and hard part was building something that was as smart as a living system. There are lots of robots out there that are teleoperated - like the remote controlled car, which has been extended to a very cool robot that are being used for bomb disposal by the military. There are lots of cool reactive systems like the Rumba, but you can't really tell it where to go. It just goes where it's gonna go. Gamma Two Robotics has combined the reactive system with a higher level brain based on an animal model so that it knows where it is and it goes where you tell it to go.” Louise also talked about military robots. Larry asked, "Is there a time when we'll actually have robots helping us out around the house?" Louise replied, "Within the next decade we will have that. Everything that we needed to build a security robot is also need to make a robot that is safe around humans and trustworthy in the house. There are a lot of additional functionalities that have to be built in." Louise feels it is very realistic in the next ten years and she really hopes it's one with her label on it. ...Listen for more... They do everything to support the entrepreneur 1204_ 4/30/12 - While he's right here and focused on Colorado, Ray Hutchins works all over the world. One of his global connections is through TiE Rockies which is associated with TiE Global. TiE Global has 57 Chapters throughout the world. We have a very vibrant and fast growing chapter right here in Denver, one of the smallest in the TiE Global network, but it is recognized as one of the most dynamic, fastest growing and most influential chapters. Asked about TiE and its makeup, Ray tells us that TiE stands for the Indus entrepreneur. Eighteen years ago a group of wealthy Indian technology guys put together the organization. The original mission was to build strong relationships between India and the United States. Something they were quite instrumental and successful at. The mission shifted over the years and today is supporting the entrepreneur. So we do everything we can to support the entrepreneur and to create jobs and to grow businesses. That's the primary mission. In order to do that TiE has two levels of membership. One level is the Charter Member and then the other is the general member. Charter members are successful business people usually older and more experienced who have achieved success of one kind or another (various criteria associated with that) and they basically fund the organization. TiE is growing very fast and enjoys a great reputation in the Denver Metro area. Ray said, it's kind of a club of successful men and women having some success and then wanting to help others and wanting to help the State grow. "That's the basic mission and if you're on board with that, then we welcome you. And, we work very hard to form relationships between these people. With us you've got to put an oar in the water and you've got to make a difference. You've got to be part of the organization and help push it forward. That's not only good for us, but it's good for you, that's how you get your pay-back." The last event w3w3 attended was fabulous. That was an event where John Kelley a board member, highly respected businessman from the Denver metro area, past CEO of McData, he is currently raising money for a new company CereScan that is changing the way brain injury and disease is diagnosed and treated around the world. He's raising money for that deal, he's a charter member, a highly respected member of our group and we came together as an organization to support him and help him raise money, and it was a very successful event. 1138_ 1/2/2012 - w3w3® Media Network looks forward to the annual Colorado Rotary State of the State reception at the Governor's mansion in Denver because they always have an important and valuable project to share with us. This year we're speaking with three people working on the Colorado High Speed Internet Project. Committee Chair Harriet Downer has a consulting firm Logical Connections, she is here in the capacity of Chair of the Colorado High Speed Internet Project along with Seth Patterson, president of the Rotary Club of Denver [and commercial real estate broker]. John Klug, the third member of our trio, says he's never worked harder and never made less - but he spends about half his time on Rotary which excites him so much, and that's his story. Seth is convinced the most important thing he can be involved in is education because it leverages everything else and ultimately should provide a solution to every other problem. John Klug, said, "We looked out a couple of years ago and we saw that Colorado was forty-sixth in the nation in terms of internet speed and was paying 10 - 15 times the cost that our neighbor states of Nebraska and Utah were paying." The Eagle Net (Educational Access Gateway Learning Environment Network) Project is part of the solution - it's the middle mile. Beyond that there's a need to connect all the classroom buildings, a need for technology in classrooms, digital content and we need to train teachers how to use this. That's really the next phase of the project. Our plan is to mobilize all of Rotary in Colorado as well as other service clubs. The problem and the need is big enough. To engage with local school districts learn and help them determine the needs and then help meet those. Larry asked what individuals and businesses can do to help. "Keep the conversation going. We have 21 months to get this done - August 2013. And this is an interstate system - without the connection into the community, it's an interstate without entrances and exits. It's the community that will take it from the school district building into the classrooms that empower the communities and that's our charge. This will impact every home and business by providing gigabyte access to every part of the Colorado." Get involved, there's more to listen to... Getting Internet access for the entire State of Colorado 1127_ 12/19/11 - We are at the Colorado Rotary State of the State and Culmination of 100 Years Anniversary Celebration of Rotary in Colorado and joined by Ron Burton, President Nominee of Rotary International. Ron explains the way their system works, he is currently the president nominee, will be elected at the Bangkok convention in May as president elect and then becomes president of Rotary International and serves in 2013-2014. Larry asked Ron, “What's happening in Rotary now?” A very big deal, Rotarians are trying to complete the "End Polio Now" (Polio Irradiation Campaign) which has been going on longer than many would like. (Larry has much interest in the topic of polio, as he had it as a youth.) Ron tells us we are getting very close. There have been about 570 cases in the world this year, which is about 37-40% of what it was last year. "But", says Ron, “we still have to finish the job. We promised the children of the world in 1987 they would live in a polio free world - and we're making progress but we have to finish the job." Rotary has stellar partners in that process. There is the World Health Organization, the Center for Disease Control, UNICEF, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and of course, the World Rotarians are on that list. There are 34,000 Rotary Clubs in the world and 200 countries and political subdivisions. Every Rotary club is autonomous, so they can pick and choose the projects they want to do. But every Rotary Club does many, many things around the community. One of the big catalysts that occurred here in Colorado is the Internet access for the entire State which puts Colorado in First Place! And, the catalyst for that was a network of 174 Rotary Clubs in the State of Colorado. It wouldn't have happened without them! Rotarians live by the four-way test, Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned? Does it build goodwill and better friendship? Is it beneficial to all concerned? If you can answer those four questions in a positive way...there's much more to listen to... Powerful messaging starts with extensive research 1102_ 10/31/11 - We're talking with a person who has a wide range of various clients, big ones like Ball AeroSpace, all the way to and including startup entrepreneurs. Michael Hamers is the founder of LightSpeed Commercial Arts based in Boulder, Colorado for the past 20 years. Just as a disclaimer, Mike has done a lot of work for w3w3.com. He's done our logo, most of the graphics and helpful navigation on our website. We asked Michael for an overview of LightSpeed CA... Mike tells us he's had a wide range of clients and he's worked on everything from helping to publish seven books on nano technology, bio science clients, technical companies and manufacturers, even food service and healthcare. He's personally been an employee for Harley Davidson and worked for Ball Aerospace after returning to Boulder after one year, working in Australia for one client. Mike has done everything from tradeshow pieces and business cards, brochures and flyers as well as web sites. We wondered what he focuses on, and how does this work? One aspect of Mike's business and a piece that he loves is logo design. He loves the thought process, the combination of analytical and creative thinking, the creative problem solving experience to help get the message across for the client. The process involves quite a bit of research both about the company, their values and, what they want to look like in five years. He learns who their clients are and who is there competition including the competition's mark/identifiers, and he has to learn about and understand their industry. Mike said, "Yes. I have to understand the client and their goals; I really have to understand the competition - how are they already positioned right down to knowing what makes them unique - I have to know what colors and fonts they are using so that we're not colliding." Today Larry is interviewing John Kelley, Chairman and CEO, of CereScan. This exciting company is working on ideas that will help tons of people in ways never dreamt of before. Psychiatry and Neurology have been struggling for years with the dilemma of how to accurately diagnose patients with chronic brain disorders. This is particularly challenging when there are multiple symptoms and potentially more than one causation in the patient's brain. CereScan is an exciting new business here in Denver that's in the business of helping patients and doctors sort out the problems that patients might be experiencing with brain disorders. We combine imaging and diagnostics and giving a treating doctor the best possible information in the world, to help their patients. CereScan is just now beginning to gain acceptance with medical professionals dealing with chronic and potentially debilitating disease. Today, CereScan is shedding new light on neurological conditions such as Parkinson's Disease, Alzheimer's Disease, and mild Traumatic Brain Injury. Larry asked, why would someone need a brain scan and diagnostic evaluation at CereScan? John said, "The brain is a very complicated organ and as we've seen with the NFL or the military, it's really hard to start figuring out what's really wrong in the brain. Leonard Nimoy and Star Trek come to Colorado
1277 9/10/12 - [Orig. Pub. 4/26/10]
At the 26th National Space Symposium, The Space Foundation Recognized Leonard Nimoy with the Douglas S. Morrow Public Outreach Award. Larry and Pat had an opportunity to have a discussion with Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame. But Nimoy is so much more than that. American actor, film director, poet, musician, and photographer. Famous for playing the character of Spock on the original Star Trek television series and films. They decided to talk about other topics that help us learn more about him and what has shaped his character over the past 79 years as well as understanding his hot buttons. We started out by reflecting on some poetry Leonard read as 'whale song' was heard in the background...that was decades ago but it opened up insights to his current interests and concerns. When asked, Is there something businesses can do to motivate children? Mr. Nimoy's reply was an ouch. "I'm not a sociologist, I'm not a businessman, I can't speak intelligently about that. I'll tell you what I am concerned about; I'm concerned about how much television kids watch that is not uplifting, or educational or inspiring in any way. It's all about celebrity, and if you're celebrity, come and tell us about your celebrity. What have you accomplished? I'm a celebrity - I'm famous for having a lot of children, so I want a TV show - It's crazy. What we have descended to in our education, it's crazy! It's really sad, I could go on about that, I'm not going to." He had a great deal to say about advice he would give to someone following his career path. "The biggest fantasy, myth about my work, about being an actor is people who think a look will get you somewhere, be at the right place and time, that kind of thing - luck plays a big role, but I never believed that, not even as a teenager...Education, it's all about education. Learn, learn, learn and devote yourself to a profession. Be professional about it." Larry asked, "Do you feel the U.S. is losing its position in terms of space?" Leonard replied, "Yes, I don't know to what degree this is true. I don't want to be an alarmist about this, but I do think we've got some work to do." We did end with a Vulcan salute. Bring along the next generation of entrepreneurial talent
1264_ 8/20/12 -
Phil Weiser is the Dean of the University of Colorado Law School, Thompson Professor of Law, and Executive Director and Founder of the Silicon Flatirons Center for Law, Technology, and Entrepreneurship at the University of Colorado. When Phil returned from his time in DC and the White House, one of the assignments he came back with was to help head up the state chapter of StartUp America. So Brad Feld, Jan Horsfall and Phil took on the mission of being the co-chairs and they've been ramping up - you can find out all about it at www.startupcolorado.com. They have a number of initiatives, Phil tells us, "First and foremost challenge is to amp up, amplify and further connect in Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs and Fort Collins. So we've been working on that and a few other initiatives..." It's all gotten off to a great start and they'll be celebrating Year One and look to Year Two on October 15th. An event celebrating Brad Feld's book, 'Startup Communities' which is all about this project helping to support start ups. Brad Bernthal tells us about the Startup Summer Program. It's one of Startup Colorado's missions which is to bring along the next generation of entrepreneurial talent in this state. The program embedded interns in 15 startups this summer. The startups agreed that they'd give C-level management face-time with the interns on a regular basis. The Interns attended regular classes - where the best and brightest out of the Boulder community provided classes on entrepreneurship. Lastly, each of the interns actually developed their own business plans and at the end of the summer pitched the businesses they're trying to build. It was transformative, the kind of thing that changes the trajectory of their careers and from Colorado's perspective a big win. Larry asked for clarification of what is meant by the ecosystem? Disruptive Strategies for Building Your Business

People are the cause of all problems and people are the source of all solutions.
3. The Trends: Understanding your sector's history, trends and ground swell. Insight into the past and future is important. The ground swells we are facing today have the greatest impact.

Connecting opportunities with money
1247_ 7/23/12 -
Quick overview of MSF Enterprises, Michael Fields, the managing partner, tells us at MSF Enterprises "We connect opportunities with money." They have four practice areas in their business: investment banking, merchant banking, capital raising for alternative investment firms and an advisory service practice for family offices. Larry recommends, if you haven't listened to part 1, go back and catch that. Larry's first question here is, "How long do you believe it will it take to achieve the $5 Trillion goal?" That is one very big goal. Michael explains this is the Galt's Gulch Initiative to really build the asset management community here in Colorado, so that we have better resources for capital, across the board. Michael said, “We currently have about $8 Billion here in Colorado. We think we can get to $5 Trillion, done in a proactive stance, by attracting firms and also building firms, within four to five years." With technology today and just the ability for people to talk globally you can be anywhere. Colorado just has wonderful assets for quality of life that can attract very good people. In the past seven years, 700,000 people have moved here for 425,000 jobs. When you realize people come here without jobs because they want to be here, that's already a great motivating factor. We have a great talent pool to draw from. Larry asks, what steps so you plan on taking in order to attract all these different people and organizations? "We're working on the Galt's Gulch Initiative, which is really working on a three legged approach in terms of the government, universities as well as the private sector..." Listen for more.

Answers to the biggest challenges businesses face today
1222_ 6/11/12 -
Chris Coughlin started his first business when he was seven years old--it ended when a policeman stopped him and informed him that taking mail from mailboxes to hand deliver to doorsteps in the hope of a tip was a federal crime. Lawn mowing and snow shoveling businesses soon followed. We asked Chris what he felt were the biggest challenges businesses face today. Chris tells us he believes there are two - "One is the uncertainty out of Washington D.C. I don't care how they solve it, everyone knows they have to put more money in and we have to cut spending. But the uncertainty and the growing debt makes someone like me more risk averse." He bought a farm last year - something solid, protection against inflation. Chris said, "I could have hired someone for that investment, but I just felt I needed a little insurance policy, an asset that was always going to be there." The second, "We're in a relatively flat economy. For small businesses, margins are under assault. You know in a growing economy there's more revenue for everybody - that's not the way it is today. So maintaining your margins and growing your revenue are very difficult in a flat economy environment. We discussed "What the greatest opportunities are for business in this environment, and then Larry asked, "Advice to an entrepreneur just starting out?" "Years ago Charles Schwab was asked that question. His answer was, "Take the two biggest things you wish to accomplish and everyday wake up to do every possible thing on those two things before you do one other thing." Chris said, in other words if you have two huge opportunities, don't get distracted by minutia. Do everything possible on the two biggest things, and you'll see your business turn and thrive. Chris gave us a bunch of good advice in this short interview. Check out the Revenue North BizCon, June 27th in Denver.

Aaron Harber, what government could learn from entrepreneurs 1210_ 5/14/12 - Our political environment is in a shambles and there is little opportunity to learn about the issues or the candidates in this super charged, unhealthy atmosphere. w3w3.com's policy has been to avoid politics in favor of following the people and affirmative activities that make our business and economic environment work, and grow a healthy future. As we face another presidential election as well as state and national elections, we have discovered Aaron Harber, who with his TV show, presents non-partisan, mutually respectful, civil conversations about controversial issues in the political arena. It sounds like a dream come true and the opportunity for w3w3.com to help bring light to a very important area of our lives. This information has a tremendous impact on our business and local communities. Aaron tells us about his show, "The program is really an opportunity for people to see those opinion leaders, people in government, in business and academia and the media, talking about the key issues of the day. The show's effort is to always be non-partisan, so you see as many republicans as democrats on the show. And", said Aaron, "we wanted to be a place where people could come with confidence, knowing that they're going to get accurate information. The whole purpose is to demonstrate that you can have a mutually respectful, civil conversation about controversial issues. Which of course, you don't see a lot of on television today." With his entrepreneurial background we asked Aaron what government could learn from entrepreneurs and business. His answer, boiled down to learning efficiencies and setting priorities. One of the advantages in the free market is you rarely can do everything you want to do. In business there is a much greater distinction than government, between doing what you absolutely have to do vs. doing what you would like to do. You see more the necessity in business than you do in government. Government entities, while well intentioned, there is a tendency to do as much as government entities would like to do, and feel is a good thing to do. So the intention is positive but the decision that really should be made in government is what is it that we really have to do. A different way of looking at opportunities in business 1161_ 2/13/12 - We're looking at and talking about the Deming Center's unique approach. Immediately Paul Jerde hits us with a disclaimer... "You know, you're talking to somebody who thinks entrepreneurship is the answer to almost every question. It's fun to try it sometimes, how are we going to solve the challenges of poverty and economic development around the world? How are we going to address healthcare around the world? Entrepreneurs are going to do that and I could go on and on. But I find that people tend to narrowly define what entrepreneurship is and I've talked to you about the value of education in the context of higher education not only for business students but for engineers, technologists, for arts and humanities... but bottom line of all of this, realistically most of our students are going to need to get jobs in companies to get experience. So it's in our best interests, and best interest across the campus for companies to have a reason to be connected with what the university is doing. So we've done this around building industry sectors. And what we believe we do by teaching entrepreneurship to our students - they come out having graduated with an interest in finance or in marketing, operations, systems integration, whatever the skill set is, we add something which is an integrated way of looking at the way all the parts of the business work together. We think it's a differentiator for students, they’re willing to; when they go out, learn the lexicon of other areas of specialization even though they'll get a job in marketing or finance. So entrepreneurship is not just about starting companies, it's a set of tools. By doing that we find that companies are more interested in becoming engaged and connected through the things that we're doing in the school of business but broadly across campus. Because by developing relationships, they develop a reputation within the university. You know students don't read the websites of companies; they socially connect on which companies are great companies to go to work for. And this allows the companies to learn earlier, connect earlier with the best and brightest talent that we have, build relationships, and test them in internships, mentorships and other relationships. I like to say, we like to connect with companies that are entrepreneurial. That doesn't just mean they're startups, that have a strong local, regional presence but a national or international reach. Those are our target companies that are so good for us because it opens up a rich field of opportunities for students ...listen for more... He profits Most Who Serves Best, August 1911 1124_ 12/12/11 - With over 700 in attendance, the Colorado Rotarians celebrate the culmination of 100 years in Colorado at the 6th annual state of the state luncheon. Christy Ramee, President, Rotary Club of Denver Lodo introduces Governor John Hickenlooper. The first motto of Rotary International, "He profits Most Who Serves Best", was approved at the second Rotary Convention, held in Portland, Oregon, in August 1911. Colorado Governor John Hickenlooper, a geologist-turned brewpub pioneer who had never run for political office (not even student council) before being elected Denver Mayor in 2003, was elected Governor of Colorado on Nov. 2, 2010. One of the topics the governor talked about is one of Colorado’s challenges. Colorado is ranked #42 out of 50 states on per student costs, speed and access to the internet at our schools. Our neighboring states of Nebraska, Wyoming and Utah offer high speed internet access at one-tenth the current Colorado costs. In 2000, approximately 45,000 classes throughout the US school systems were taken online. In 2009, approximately three million classes were taken online. The expectation is that by 2019, one half of all high school classes will be online. The students of Colorado deserve access to high speed internet at an affordable price to meet the challenges of the 21st century global economy! Here’s the solution. With the support of the three Rotary Districts in the State of Colorado and many current and former Rotarians, the Rotary Club of Denver assisted EAGLE-Net (Educational Access Gateway Learning Environment Network, www.co-eaglenet.net ) to acquire a $100.6 million federal stimulus grant, plus $46 million additional in in-kind services to install high speed internet to 234 community anchor points (CAIs) throughout the State. These CAIs include all 178 school district buildings. The other CAIs are libraries, museums and some colleges and universities not already served. This network is referred to as the “Middle Mile” and construction has already started...get involved and listen, there's much more... Fifty-two percent of U.S. employers are having trouble filling jobs 1120_ 12/5/11 - Unemployment has been around 9% for some time and it doesn't look like there's any change in the immediate future. We have with us today, an expert in the employment arena, Melodie Reagan, i2i Workforce. Larry's question relates to the employer's view of the dilemma, even with the high unemployment it is difficult to find people for the jobs and yet people seeking employment are having a hard time finding work. Melodie said, "It's a very paradoxical situation, but it is a reality. There are a couple of trends and situations emerging that make it ever more complex." She explains, very simply it is a supply and demand issue. Manpower does an annual talent shortage survey and 52% of U.S. employers are having trouble filling jobs. According to Manpower the top three jobs they're having difficulty selling are skilled trades, sales representatives and engineers. The openings are now in double digits, so it's getting worse. One of the issues they're running into is about fit, it's about having the right skill. What is happening is we have workers with a specific skill set and employers looking for a specific skill set but they're not necessarily coming together. An example, you're not going to hire a sales rep that sells cars to sell software, right? The employer has a list of requirements and it's difficult to find someone who fits all the requirements. Another issue is with employers, once they bring someone, because of longevity. Longevity in the U.S. is actually under three years. Compared to the top 13 industrialized nations, we have the shortest job duration. Consequently employers can no longer afford to train workers unless they come to the job with the appropriate skill sets. Employers are willing to train for job specific skills but not marketable skills. They'll train you if they use a CRM, but they're not going to train you to be a sales person. Consequently what's happening is we are running into skill gaps. Situations that Melodie's company has run into are companies hiring marketing managers - and the marketing manager doesn't know anything about social media; or sales representatives that they don't know how to use a CRM, or Sales Force or an online web tool. They have even seen situations where they've had engineers that don't know how to use computers or automated tools because of the industry they've been in ...listen, there's more detail... 7/24/12 This is a time for all Coloradans to come together ...and help our community. w3w3.com joins Colorado Technology Association and others, appealing to the generosity of the technology community to donate money to the "Aurora Victim Relief Fund” through a collaborative effort through GivingFirst.org in partnership with Governor John Hickenlooper. There is immediate need to raise money for the burial costs and medical bills for the victims of last week’s deadly shooting on July 20th at an Aurora Cinema.
Medical bills are adding up into the millions for the victims of last week's shooting and some families can’t afford the burial costs of their loved ones. Thank you for your generous support.
The horrific tragedy in Aurora
[1245_ 7/23/12]
While this is a time of such great sorrow, it is also a time of great pride in all of our support services in Colorado. Especially the Aurora Police who were on scene within 90 seconds and quickly recognized the perpetrator. Proud of the brave souls in the theatre who acted to protect others, of the fire department, the police rescuers and emergency medical teams [EMS], the hospitals, doctors and nurses who tended the wounded.
It is hard to admit the fact that there is more than a signle guilty party. But, our culture and society show a lack of personal responsibility and integrity, coupled with arrogance, greed and corruption on so many levels. We cannot begin to understand the mind of anyone capable of this horror. But we can work to change the environment that created the opportunity for this evil to grow. What can you and I, the individual people do to prevent this type of event from ever happening again? We think it begins with ourselves. Demanding honesty, compassion and understanding in our personal and professional dealings. We must serve as models - on an everyday basis for what we want to see in others... We have witnessed great courage and wisdom from the many heroes and they have inspired us here during this tragedy. The greatest journey begins with a single step…
Leonard Nimoy and Star Trek come to Colorado 832_ 4/26/10 - At the 26th National Space Symposium, Larry and Pat had an opportunity to have a discussion with Leonard Nimoy of Star Trek fame. But Nimoy is so much more than that. When asked, Is there something businesses can do to motivate children?" His reply was an ouch.
