Financial capital, angel investors, institutional venture capitalists
1472_ 12/2/13 - With a 16 year career - and a lot of startup, building and exiting experience, Jim Deters, the founder / managing director of Galvanize wanted to build a platform that basically solved a lot of the problems he had encountered when building his own companies. The problems really revolved around three things, having a flexible workspace and having like minded people around, it was having and finding more human capital - more software engineers, more great talent to add to his team and of course, finding the financial capital, angel investors or institutional venture capitalists to invest in a new company. So basically, Jim said, "We put all of those under one roof here at Galvanize to coalesce with ecosystems on those three big problems." Summarizing, the three big C's, as they say at Galvanize, are Community, Capital and Curriculum... oh, and they've added Coffee to that list. Larry asked, "How do you recruit companies for this space?" So they opened October 22, 2012 - moved in with 17 companies and from that nucleus they now have about 150 companies... listen for more...

The 2002 CTEK e-Ball proved to be "Event of the Year"
1535_ 4/28/14 - - It was 2002...and the Good News is that there will be another November 1, 2003 at the Renaissance Hotel - Interlocken! We're talking about the CTEK Entrepreneurs Ball and it's too bad if you weren't there. However, here's the next best thing, Lu Cordova and her CTEK team created a scene that fed the starving west. Being there was more fun than we've had in a long time. (Photos from last year below!)
We asked what should you wear - now we'll see who was there and what they wore! Come back often, with over 200 photos we'll be adding and changing the view - again and again-frequently. The Omni was packed and spilling beautiful people all over. It was fun, it was exciting - the food was great - that sound system from Bang & Olufsen was outstanding... and I want one. We wore name tags (which was nice) but it definitely had the glamour and ambiance of a 'ball' ! Social entrepreneurship to empower destitute women
1535_ 4/28/14 -
It was 2012...Social entrepreneur Connie Duckworth founded ARZU, (which means “hope” in Dari), in 2004, to empower destitute women weavers in rural Afghanistan. Connie serves pro bono as Chairman and CEO. Starting with 30 weavers, ARZU has transformed into a learning laboratory for holistic grassroots economic development —today employing some 700 women, providing access to education and basic healthcare, seeding multiple micro-business start-ups, building community centers, pre-schools and parks, and creating award-winning fair-labor rugs—all in a country ranked as “the world’s worst place to be a woman.” Ms. Duckworth retired in 2001 as a Partner and Managing Director of Goldman Sachs, the first woman to be named a sales and trading partner in the firm’s history. She tells us she really wanted to re balance how she spent her time. So she envisioned 1/3 business activities, 1/3 philanthropic activities and 1/3 family oriented activities. ARZU became the focus of her philanthropy.

Annual Veterans' Appreciation Breakfast and Civilian Success Fair
1543_ 5/5/14 -
This past Thursday Larry was a speaker at the Denver Southeast Rotary Club. Afterwards, we met and spoke with Bill Palmer who is chairing the Denver Southeast Rotary's 8th Annual Veterans' Appreciation Breakfast and Civilian Success Fair ... May 24th, 2014 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum.. Bill, US Navy retired, Commanding Officer, USS Denver, and Fast Frigate Trainer, Buckley, CO. and Vietnam Veteran. Bill wanted to do more for our Military veterans as he worked on this program . 'A great breakfast, a patriotic program, thank you for your service' is all great, but Bill wanted more - These men and women have given so much to our country and Bill wanted to do something that would really help these veterans. "You know they can't just go to the VA Hospital and get help - there's a process you must go through." Getting help can be complicated, getting to know their families again, assimilating back into civilian life is not an easy task. These men and women have been through an incredible journey and that journey has changed them. So in addition to that wonderful, plated breakfast and excellent patriotic program [Senator Hank Brown, Senator Mark Udall and keynote speaker Major General Jay Lindell. The Mission: To show America's Veterans appreciation for what they have done, have been willing to do for our country and to assist them with tools for success following their service. The Goal: For you to leave better prepared, to enhance your life through personal growth. Breakout opportunities at the Success Fair: Your time to interact with those who can help you make a better life for yourself. Higher Ed: G. I. Bill mentors; PTS: Counselors to advise how to navigate the VA mental health system; Homeless Services; Emergency Services; Job Hunting Assistance; Job Placement.... there's much more. PROJECT C.U.R.E. has over 12,000 volunteers all making a difference PROJECT C.U.R.E. (Commission on Urgent Relief & Equipment) was founded in 1987 to help meet the need for medical supplies, equipment and services around the world. Since its inception, PROJECT C.U.R.E. has delivered medical relief to needy people in over 120 countries. Larry and Pat interviewed Douglas Jackson, President and CEO of Project C.U.R.E. about their progress and how they are impacting so many lives. Addressing the history Doug said, "We got started 22-23 years ago, quite unintentionally. Doug’s father Dr. James Jackson was doing economic consulting in the 3rd world – Zimbabwe, Peru, Ecuador and finally Brazil where he saw a clinic, a beat-up, ramshackle cabin thing, in the middle of a town of 300,000 people – and there weren’t any medical supplies and no real equipment. So, my pop decided that day that he would do something to change that situation." Doug went on, "There are a number of ways to be involved with Project CURE. You can donate medical equipment if you have some, crutches, and walkers that you needed temporarily. We figure it costs us about $25 to deliver a box of medical supplies or equipment anywhere in the world. The value of what’s in that big old box is about $500. So for every $25 in, we can put $500 overseas." Listen to this...we can all make difference... Related Links:

Mantra for Venture Capitalists Today + Mobius VC Tips
1535_ 4/28/14_ It was 2004...Brad Feld, managing director of Mobius Venture Capital identifies what VCs are looking at today…including exit strategies, hot markets, checklist of the VC’s mantra, what Mobius VC is focused on today as well as essentials for the first-time entrepreneur who is building a new company. Everything is changing. All the rules are changing…or are they? SOFTBANK Venture Capital is now Mobius Venture Capital (And today it’s the Foundry Group). Brad Feld has cut his hair (unlike Samson, he has not lost his strength). Are these changes symbolic, superficial or just a sign of our changing times? Leadership in changing times has been elusive to many organizations…great leadership that is. Some say leaders have learned from their experience. We’ve heard people proudly point out they have 18 years experience…in truth, they’ve had one experience 18 times. Yes, leaders do learn from experience, but it’s the distillation of all the good and challenging events that makes the difference. Brad’s mother and father had a great impact on him…personally and professionally. Along the way in the business world (starting at age 15 in Brad’s case) there were others that also influenced his beliefs and values. He learned from some tough lessons as well as from his successes. Brad shares some of his "learning experiences" in this provocative interview. Many business people are surprised to hear that there is a growing number (contrary to popular belief) of women getting into and making a very productive and rewarding career in Information Technology (IT). In walks Lucy Sanders, CEO and Founder of the National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT), headquartered at CU Boulder. Lucy is a Bell Fellow and points out (proves) there are many female entrepreneur success stories or as she and her team states it, they are “NCWIT Heroes”.
