Financial capital, angel investors, institutional venture capitalists
1472_ 12/2/13 - With a 16 year career - and a lot of startup, building and exiting experience, Jim Deters, the founder / managing director of Galvanize wanted to build a platform that basically solved a lot of the problems he had encountered when building his own companies. The problems really revolved around three things, having a flexible workspace and having like minded people around, it was having and finding more human capital - more software engineers, more great talent to add to his team and of course, finding the financial capital, angel investors or institutional venture capitalists to invest in a new company. So basically, Jim said, "We put all of those under one roof here at Galvanize to coalesce with ecosystems on those three big problems." Summarizing, the three big C's, as they say at Galvanize, are Community, Capital and Curriculum... oh, and they've added Coffee to that list. Larry asked, "How do you recruit companies for this space?" So they opened October 22, 2012 - moved in with 17 companies and from that nucleus they now have about 150 companies... listen for more...

What to expect at GlueCon 2014
1545_ 5/12/14 -
Glue Con coming May 21 & 22, 2014. Eric Norlin, Founder of the Glue Conference, said, On day 1, you’ll see several breakout tracks: APIs, Cloud, DevOps and Identity. These tracks are designed to be taken “as a whole” — which is to say, that my intent is that you would pick a track for the afternoon. Of course, you’re more than free to violate that, and bounce from track to track. But, for instance, in the Identity track, you’ll get exposed to a session on tokens, one on OneName (distributed identity via bitcoin’s block chain), several on SSO and OpenID, and one on mobile platforms and identity. Similarly, in the DevOps track, you’ll dig in on SaltStack, Ansible, using Go and AWS clusters, and Docker. And again, the same kind of pattern for APIs and Cloud. Each track has discussion time and led Q&A — where the sessions are meant to inspire discussions *across* the individual session topics. 2.) Running parallel to the day 1 tracks, you’ll find 2 workshops. These workshops (one on Mesos, and one on ECL and HPCC) are 2 hours in length, and meant as extensive dives into a specific topic. 3.) Day 2s breakouts are grouped by themed tracks, per se, but you’ll still find broad groupings of topics — be they devops, APIs, platforms, SDKs, or analytics. 4.) In all cases, you’ll find solo presentations that are meant to be technically advanced. In other words, come prepared. 5.) Over the 2 days of GlueCon, you’ll find 78 sessions PACKED with content. No fluffy panels, just substance. "I hope you’ll take a few minutes and really look through the agenda. If you’re a developer, I’m confident that doing so will make you want to attend. And to do that, all you need to do is register." RELATED LINKS:

This past Thursday Larry was a speaker at the Denver Southeast Rotary Club. Afterwards, we met and spoke with Bill Palmer who is chairing the Denver Southeast Rotary's 8th Annual Veterans' Appreciation Breakfast and Civilian Success Fair ... May 24th, 2014 from 8:00 am to 1:00 pm at the Wings Over the Rockies Museum.. Bill, US Navy retired, Commanding Officer, USS Denver, and Fast Frigate Trainer, Buckley, CO. and Vietnam Veteran. Bill wanted to do more for our Military veterans as he worked on this program . 'A great breakfast, a patriotic program, thank you for your service' is all great, but Bill wanted more - These men and women have given so much to our country and Bill wanted to do something that would really help these veterans. "You know they can't just go to the VA Hospital and get help - there's a process you must go through." Getting help can be complicated, getting to know their families again, assimilating back into civilian life is not an easy task. These men and women have been through an incredible journey and that journey has changed them. So in addition to that wonderful, plated breakfast and excellent patriotic program [Senator Hank Brown, Senator Mark Udall and keynote speaker Major General Jay Lindell. The Mission: To show America's Veterans appreciation for what they have done, have been willing to do for our country and to assist them with tools for success following their service. The Goal: For you to leave better prepared, to enhance your life through personal growth. Breakout opportunities at the Success Fair: Your time to interact with those who can help you make a better life for yourself. Higher Ed: G. I. PROJECT C.U.R.E. has over 12,000 volunteers all making a difference PROJECT C.U.R.E. (Commission on Urgent Relief & Equipment) was founded in 1987 to help meet the need for medical supplies, equipment and services around the world. Since its inception, PROJECT C.U.R.E. has delivered medical relief to needy people in over 120 countries. Larry and Pat interviewed Douglas Jackson, President and CEO of Project C.U.R.E. about their progress and how they are impacting so many lives. Addressing the history Doug said, "We got started 22-23 years ago, quite unintentionally. Doug’s father Dr. James Jackson was doing economic consulting in the 3rd world – Zimbabwe, Peru, Ecuador and finally Brazil where he saw a clinic, a beat-up, ramshackle cabin thing, in the middle of a town of 300,000 people – and there weren’t any medical supplies and no real equipment. So, my pop decided that day that he would do something to change that situation." Doug went on, "There are a number of ways to be involved with Project CURE. You can donate medical equipment if you have some, crutches, and walkers that you needed temporarily. We figure it costs us about $25 to deliver a box of medical supplies or equipment anywhere in the world. The value of what’s in that big old box is about $500. So for every $25 in, we can put $500 overseas." Listen to this...we can all make difference... Related Links:
