Entrepreneurs worldwide make a difference
1566_ 6/16/14 -
Entrepreneurs make a difference. They not only have great ideas, but also the drive to make them a reality. They use their fresh thinking and hard work to create positive social change – bringing new concepts and products to market, and creating jobs and wealth. EY's commitment to entrepreneurial companies, in both emerging and developed economies around the world, helps ensure that we’re working with more of tomorrow’s global leaders, today. The Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards program was started to celebrate successful entrepreneurs, so they could share their stories, inspire others and receive the recognition they deserve. That first program took place in 1986 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. By 1987 it was held across 11 US cities. And in 1993 the program started to expand internationally. Today the program spans more than 140 cities in 50 countries, which together represent more than 90% of the global economy. Over the past five years, more than 6,500 entrepreneurs joined the Entrepreneur Of The Year alumni. A “who’s who” of both developed and emerging markets, these alumni include many household names. Over half of today’s top 100 NASDAQ companies have won Entrepreneur Of The Year, and most received the award before they achieved top 100 status. Ten years ago EY decided to go global and started World Entrepreneur Of The Year. Held annually in Monaco, Entrepreneur Of The Year country winners compete for the World Entrepreneur Of The Year title. Today we are talking with Jim Wilson, director of the Mountain Desert Region of the program and past winner and current judge, Mike Shehan, Co-Founder, CEO, spotXchange,..listen for more...

Taking something that was done a long time ago
1568_ 6/16/14 -
A Gen-2 company - it's all about taking something that was done a long time ago and actually making it work for businesses today. We're here at the Glue Conference talking with Michael Thornton from App Dynamics. Michael tells us what they do is "application intelligence'. That's really about three primary things, see, act and meld. Your application is how you relate to your customer - we're all software driven businesses today. Understanding how those applications run in the production world is critical to our success. When something starts to wrong within your applications and your end users aren't having the experience you want them to have, what do you do to make sure that's remediated as fast as possible (that's the act part of this equation). The last piece is melding, what kind of information can we pull out of that data that's going across your application. We asked Michael what the biggest opportunity for business is today. He said...Listen for some great ideas...

As Business Development Manager for the Colorado Office of Economic Development and International Trade, Sam Bailey somehow fits in a second full time position. At OEDIT his focus is to recruit, retain and grow companies, across a variety of industries, and in addition Sam also serves as the program director for Colorado Companies to Watch. COCTW came to Colorado in 2009. Companies to Watch was actually a national program with the Edward Lowe Foundation, based in Michigan. This foundation arose to recognize high growth second stage companies. These are companies that are beyond startups, they're really scale-ups. In Colorado, they are headquartered here in our state, are privately held and have six to ninety-nine employees full time employees, $750,000 to $50M in revenue and have an extreme capacity for growth. This demographic represents a significant portion of the job creators in our state. This program has been in the state of Colorado now for six years. Sam said, "I would argue that it is one of the premiere programs in the state... Last year we had 803 nominations, this year we've had 1200 nominations. So when you talk about growth this program is gathering a lot of traction, and that's for 50 slots for winners. Back in 2010-13 our 50 winners generate $1.1 Billion in revenue. And in those three years, also added 1005 employees to the economy. That's new jobs just on these companies and you can see as of last year these companies have employed 1771 employees. That's substantial, when you talk high impact, these companies...

LISTEN: Industry Briefing and High Tech Session Recap 1561_ 6/9/14 - We are at the CTA Industry Briefing & Legislative Session Celebration speaking with JB Holston, Chairman, Sitrion and Co-Chair of CTA's Public Policy Committee to talk about the legislative session and CTA's public policy efforts in general. JB said their committee got together about a year ago and decided to make some changes to effect better results from their efforts. They began by "...identifying the key issues we wanted to talk about well ahead of the next legislative session and the other thing was to start developing relationships with the legislators so that as the session started we could have conversations with folks that knew us, we'd gone to lunch with, had coffee with, talked about some of these issues informally with. That was a big change in the way CTA had been involved in the legislative process and I think it paid big dividends this year." The other speakers were: Erik Mitisek, CEO, CTA; Bill Mueldener, Principal, Hein & Associates; Annette Quintana, CEO, Istonish; Roberta Robinette, President-Colorado, AT&T; Sandra Solin, President and CEO, Capitol Solutions; Nissa Szabo, Industry Affairs Manager, CTA...Listen for more interesting details of this hugely successful public policy committee's work during this legislative session. Positioning the company for the eventual recovery
1565_ 6/16/14 -
We are at the Mountain Desert Region EY Entrepreneur of the Year Finalists Reception at the Governor's Mansion here in Denver, Colorado, speaking with Sheryl Palmer, president and CEO of Taylor Morrison Home Corporation, Scottsdale, AZ. Sheryl tells us a little about Taylor Morrison, a home builder and developer building across America, east coast, west coast and Canada. They build large communities across a number of different consumer groups from first time home buyers to active adults. Sheryl is the president and CEO, a privilege she says, since 2007. Larry asked about the direction her company was taking.... Sheryl said, "Everyone probably recognizes over the past few years it's been a choppy ride for the industry. So, it's been pretty exciting, we brought two companies together that formed Taylor Morrison back in 2006 and so we spent a number of years positioning the company for the eventual recovery that we're seeing today. We've spent a lot of time making sure we have the right people in the organization, the right land positions so that we can deliver the right communities of choice to our customers." When we asked Sheryl what her best advice for others would be, she said, "Make sure you define what success means to you..." you'll have to listen to get the rest of the story!

Very interesting and challenging, but ultimately very successful

We are at the Mountain Desert Region EY Entrepreneur of the Year Finalists Reception at the Governor's Mansion here in Denver, Colorado, speaking with
Robert Donat, Founder and CEO of GPS Insight and one of the EY Finalists from Scottsdale, Arizona. Robert moved to Scottsdale from Chicago about ten years ago and he loves it. But, there was no room for him in the hedge fund space where he came from, so he decided to start this company. "And it's been very interesting, very challenging, but ultimately very successful." Rob saw a need for tracking vehicles commercial and other vehicles, to make them more efficient. So what they do is track about 65,000 trucks across the country. They are growing like crazy; very organic with no outside investment helping their customers to be more efficient, to keep track of their assets and their people to make sure that they are accountable, to make sure that they are safe and to make sure they drive return of investment for the business or governmental unit in question...Listen for more…
