The legislature's attitude was, everything is subject to sales tax
1569_ 6/23/14 -
It has taken a lot to get here, to this celebration of the earned successes of the CTA Public Policy Committee during the last legislative session as it relates to the tech industry. We are talking with Bill Mueldener, Principal, State and Local Tax Services, at HEIN with a heavy focus on the technology industry. Bill is also a board member, part of the executive committee at CTA and serves as the co-chair of the public policy committee. Bill's involvement in the association over the last several years has been working to develop policies that are business friendly to help foster the technology development and the industry within Colorado. When the economy took a downturn and the government was naturally looking for different ways to find revenue it came to the attention of the legislature that they should assess tax and make software itself a taxable transaction. The legislature's attitude was 'everything is subject to sales tax, it can't be that big of a deal'. But it's not just a big deal monetarily, but the collection burden, those kinds of things were a big issue...listen for much more...

Understand what do people want, what do they need
1569_ 6/23/14 -
We are at the Mountain Desert Region EY Entrepreneur of the Year Finalists Reception at the Governor's Mansion here in Denver, Colorado, speaking with Andrew Wyant, President, General Manager of the National Academy of Sports Medicine (NASM), the global leader in the health and fitness industry. NASM is really in the online education business and they focus on personal trainings. If you go to the gym and see a personal trainer, they have to go through a certification process. NASM is involved in delivering the online education that gets them ready for that certification exam, prepares them for jobs and gets them working. Andrew tells us they are really in the fitness and wellness space. it's not just about exercise alone, it can be about diet, it can be about wellness and there are great opportunities for us to keep building this business by helping Americans get in shape. NASM has been around for 25 years and is founded in good exercise science. But what we were able to do was take a great product and start to market it to America. . Andrew's advice for entrepreneurs included "Know your customer. For me the foundation of everything we do is understand what do people want, what do they need." Listen, there's more...

Entrepreneurs worldwide make a difference
1566_ 6/16/14 -
Entrepreneurs make a difference. They not only have great ideas, but also the drive to make them a reality. They use their fresh thinking and hard work to create positive social change – bringing new concepts and products to market, and creating jobs and wealth. EY's commitment to entrepreneurial companies, in both emerging and developed economies around the world, helps ensure that we’re working with more of tomorrow’s global leaders, today. The Entrepreneur Of The Year Awards program was started to celebrate successful entrepreneurs, so they could share their stories, inspire others and receive the recognition they deserve. That first program took place in 1986 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. By 1987 it was held across 11 US cities. And in 1993 the program started to expand internationally. Today the program spans more than 140 cities in 50 countries, which together represent more than 90% of the global economy. Over the past five years, more than 6,500 entrepreneurs joined the Entrepreneur Of The Year alumni. A “who’s who” of both developed and emerging markets, these alumni include many household names. Over half of today’s top 100 NASDAQ companies have won Entrepreneur Of The Year, and most received the award before they achieved top 100 status. Ten years ago EY decided to go global and started World Entrepreneur Of The Year. Held annually in Monaco, Entrepreneur Of The Year country winners compete for the World Entrepreneur Of The Year title. Today we are talking with Jim Wilson, director of the Mountain Desert Region of the program and past winner and current judge, Mike Shehan, Co-Founder, CEO, spotXchange,..listen for more...

Taking something that was done a long time ago
1568_ 6/16/14 -
A Gen-2 company - it's all about taking something that was done a long time ago and actually making it work for businesses today. We're here at the Glue Conference talking with Michael Thornton from App Dynamics. Michael tells us what they do is "application intelligence'. That's really about three primary things, see, act and meld. Your application is how you relate to your customer - we're all software driven businesses today. Understanding how those applications run in the production world is critical to our success. When something starts to wrong within your applications and your end users aren't having the experience you want them to have, what do you do to make sure that's remediated as fast as possible (that's the act part of this equation). The last piece is melding, what kind of information can we pull out of that data that's going across your application. We asked Michael what the biggest opportunity for business is today. He said...Listen for some great ideas...

Strategy is for amateurs, execution is for professionals
1569_ 6/23/14 -
We are at the Mountain Desert Region EY Entrepreneur of the Year Finalists Reception at the Governor's Mansion here in Denver, Colorado, speaking with Dan Burns, CEO, Accuvant, an EY Finalist. Accuvant is a cyber security company otherwise known as information security company and security today affects everyone, not only companies and organizations, but people. So the awareness and seriousness of security is just absolutely huge these days. Our goal is to help enterprises protect their data, their information, your information from leaking out to the bad guys. We're a fairly large organization at this point, $700M in revenue, 37 offices across the U.S. and Canada and we're looking to grow this company to $2-3 Billion in the next three to five years. Advice for entrepreneurs: Dan always tells his leaders, "If your best interest is aligned with the success of the people around you, you're automatically going to be successful. So I focus on the success of the people around me and don't worry so much about my own personal success." Dan added, as an entrepreneur you would be best served by focusing 10% of your time on strategy and 90% of your time on execution."...Listen for more…

Positioning the company for the eventual recovery
1565_ 6/16/14 -
We are at the Mountain Desert Region EY Entrepreneur of the Year Finalists Reception at the Governor's Mansion here in Denver, Colorado, speaking with Sheryl Palmer, president and CEO of Taylor Morrison Home Corporation, Scottsdale, AZ. Sheryl tells us a little about Taylor Morrison, a home builder and developer building across America, east coast, west coast and Canada. They build large communities across a number of different consumer groups from first time home buyers to active adults. Sheryl is the president and CEO, a privilege she says, since 2007. Larry asked about the direction her company was taking.... Sheryl said, "Everyone probably recognizes over the past few years it's been a choppy ride for the industry. So, it's been pretty exciting, we brought two companies together that formed Taylor Morrison back in 2006 and so we spent a number of years positioning the company for the eventual recovery that we're seeing today. We've spent a lot of time making sure we have the right people in the organization, the right land positions so that we can deliver the right communities of choice to our customers." When we asked Sheryl what her best advice for others would be, she said, "Make sure you define what success means to you..." you'll have to listen to get the rest of the story!

Very interesting and challenging, but ultimately very successful
1567_ 6/16/14 -
We are at the Mountain Desert Region EY Entrepreneur of the Year Finalists Reception at the Governor's Mansion here in Denver, Colorado, speaking with
Robert Donat, Founder and CEO of GPS Insight and one of the EY Finalists from Scottsdale, Arizona. Robert moved to Scottsdale from Chicago about ten years ago and he loves it. But, there was no room for him in the hedge fund space where he came from, so he decided to start this company. "And it's been very interesting, very challenging, but ultimately very successful." Rob saw a need for tracking vehicles commercial and other vehicles, to make them more efficient. So what they do is track about 65,000 trucks across the country. They are growing like crazy; very organic with no outside investment helping their customers to be more efficient, to keep track of their assets and their people to make sure that they are accountable, to make sure that they are safe and to make sure they drive return of investment for the business or governmental unit in question...Listen for more…
