You can find MorningStar in six different states, Arizona, Colorado, Montana, Idaho, Nevada, New Mexico; where Ken Jaeger and his team design, develop and operate senior living homes. They offer assisted living, memory care, independent living and even homes for active adults for those who want a calm and maintenance free lifestyle. People come in and overnight they have a hundred new friends. As an entrepreneur and EY Finalist Ken said, "This is just a wonderful opportunity to come and share our experiences with entrepreneurs from all walks of life. And it's just wonderful to meet other people and learn their stories." We asked Ken for advice that he would want to share with a person just starting on their entrepreneurial path. "I would say to a person just starting out, see your vision, know what that vision is and write it down. Never give up. You always want to chase that vision. Just as important is to know what your mission is and stay true to your mission..." Listen for more...

Value proposition for both the candidate and client

Traditionally staffing and recruitment firms are transactionaly focused, looking at the outcome only. We're talking with Kathleen Quinn Votaw, CEO, TalenTrust. Kathleen tells us that TalenTrust is often engaged with their clients for 3, 4, 5 years to help them through their growth and to ensure they have the right people in the right place and in a pipeline so that when they need to hire, they're ready to go. So they take a very holistic, sales, trust attitude toward recruitment versus a transactional attitude. In addition everything TalenTrust does for their client is guaranteed 100% for the lifetime of the agreement with them. Given that these relationships are three to five years, this is a huge differentiator in the marketplace. Kathleen really gets involved like ACG Denver where she has served on their board for 12 years and is a past president. She's also a member of Vistage, in one of the CEO groups as well as a sponsor of the organization. "Because", she explains, "we believe in their methodology and how they bring CEOs together to solve bigger picture issues. And Vistage is a group of 15,000 members throughout the globe." Also, you'll find Kathleen heavily involved with Colorado Companies to Watch - having just completed their annual gala with 860 people attending. We also are celebrating CCTW's 6th year with 300 alumni. Kathleen sees a bright future ahead and she continues working to ensure that vision.

Building the system and getting the companies commercialized
1584_ 7/14/14 -
EY Entrepreneur Finalist Jeff Pruitt is founding partner and CEO of Tallwave a venture development and venture capital firm. Jeff said they've connected a consulting firm, sleeves-rolled-up, hands-on, taking companies through the validation process, creating product / market fit and then actually commercializing companies on one side of the business - the venture capital on the other side. We have an $18 million seed fund. They work hand-in-hand on getting software-as-a-service and digital marketing companies through that crucial period of time where you're beyond concept but you're having to go commercialize something to get in the market. While venture capital is behind the success of so many companies, Jeff says, "It's more than capital - it is understanding the market. And, before you go and deploy capital, understanding where you're going to point your company; where the market is, how you're going to market it. But then early enough on, user interface, building the product, building the system, building the sales system and getting these companies commercialized - and that's a very crucial point. If you can get funded at the time they need funding but also able to deploy, getting the company into market, that timing really changes the ratio of successful companies..." Listen for more...

This is a great entrepreneur's story. Starting with fourth generation owner/president and EY Entrepreneur of the Year Finalist/Winner 2014, Kristy Taddonio Mullins of Mile Hi Foods. In 1901 Kristy's great grandfather Michael Taddonio arrived in the U.S from Italy and worked as a peddler in Denver selling fruits and vegetables door-to-door. His sons took over operating from their father's garage as Taddonio Brother's produce business. In 1956 the first McDonalds opened in Denver and mile Hi Fruit & Vegetable's was awarded the potato contract. As McDonald's grew so did Mile Hi Fruit & Vegetable. In 1968 grandson Tony Taddonio (Kristy's father) joined the firm and became the sole owner of the company, today known as Mile Hi Foods. In 1973 Tony and his wife Pam created TMT Trucking, a contract carrier with a 48 state authority for interstate transportation. By 1985 they had added a bakery to produce all of the buns used by McDonald's in the Rocky Mountain Region and now supply baked goods for Red Robin, Wingers, Good Times, King Soopers, Wendy's and Famous Dave's. In 1998 Kristy and her sister Toni join their parents in the business continuing the expansion. Listen for more....

Based in Westminster, Colo., Surefire Medical, Inc., was founded in 2009 to develop innovative infusion systems for the interventional radiology and interventional oncology markets. EY Entrepreneur Finalist, James Chomas, Founder and CEO, said, "We're developing infusion systems that can go into a patient, very locally, and deliver therapy directly to a tumor. What you think of chemotherapy today is the therapy goes throughout the whole body, the patient loses their hair, as well as other side effects - and sometimes the tumor doesn't even get really very much therapy!" Surefire’s infusion systems are designed to precisely deliver embolic agents through a unique micro catheter with an expandable tip that collapses in forward flow and dynamically expands to the vessel wall in reverse flow in order to increase targeted delivery, minimize reflux and reduce damage to healthy tissue. Surefire Medical’s vision is to improve patients’ lives by delivering a new standard of excellence for Interventional Radiology. The physicians that perform this are called 'Interventional Radiologists' but this is a new way of treating cancer, through a medical device technique, getting right into the disease...there's more...

Gaming company focused on teaching critical technology skills
1581_ 7/14/14 -
This is Lucy Sanders, the CEO for the National Center for Women and Information Technology or NCWIT, along with Larry Nelson of w3w3.com Media Network. We are interviewing a company in the 'gamification space', sort of the culmination of the education and gaming field and also an NCWIT member company in our entrepreneurial alliance. Moira Hardek is the president and CEO of Galvanize Labs a hybrid gaming company focused on teaching critical technology skills. They have produced a number of educational video games. Most recently a game called 'Taking Charge' that submerges players in captivating, learning stories while peaking on some of the fundamental building blocks of a quality technology education. "This is a key building block for any career. (We challenged the kids to name a career that didn't involve technology - there really aren't any.)" Moira said, "There are four pillars that describe who we are and what we believe, and can very effectively solve any problem. The first is Data: To collect data and information to properly analyze the problem. We believe very strongly in education - you always have to acknowledge your power, so education is big for us. Game theory is what drives everything for us and so that's our 3rd pillar. Game theory is all about creating internal motivation. So it's not just gamification, it's not just having fun, but creating motivation for your user. Then the fourth pillar being a great user experience." listen for more...

Really exciting and a life saving development
1583_ 7/14/14 -
We begin with an overview of Yulex Corp, speaking with the founder and CEO, Jeff Martin. This is really exciting and a life saving development for people suffering from a latex allergy. A lot of people don't know the U.S. has been 100% dependent on imports of natural rubber. Ninety percent of all the natural rubber in the world comes from southeast Asia, and there are sever allergy problems with the tropical latex that comes from southeast Asia. It's been a problem for a very long time. Yulex Corp has developed a new source of botanical rubber. Jeff said, "What we've done is taken a wild crop, namely Yule ('y-u-lee'), which is indigenous to Mexico, and brought it into Arizona. We've domesticated the crop and developed a process to extract natural rubber from this wild plant. We built a factory in Phoenix where we extract and refine the rubber and sell it into the medical and consumer product industries. Basically it's the emergence of a natural rubber business for the United States." Jeff also told us that they are providing this natural rubber latex for the medical industry where Latex allergy is a severe problem. It just so happens that the domestic latex that we grow here in the United States is non-allergenic. So we're gearing up for medical gloves, surgical gloves, condoms, catheters- for people who have a latex allergy. The best advice Jeff ever received was from another EY Entrepreneur of the Year (Florida, 20 years ago) who happened to be Jeff's boss. He said, "It's easier to knock things down than to knock things in. Don't be SNIOP - and to be SNIOPed is to be Susceptible to the Negative Influences of Other People. So listen to your own heart and move forward."
