Life. It’s about creating yourself

Larry interviewed Mike Hamers founder of LightSpeed Commercial Arts. Mike said, "Everyone is invited to an Artists Reception night of The Fresh A.I.R.: Artists In Recovery group show Friday, Sept. 5th 2014 from 5:30 to 8:30pm at NCAR’s Community Gallery" (located on west Table Mesa Drive Lab overlooking Boulder). This exhibit features 76 works by 20 artists bearing the theme, Through Art, Visions and Dreams, the Light Comes Through. It’s free and viewable to the public 7-days-a-week until September 26th. The Fresh A.I.R.: Artists In Recovery Show is a series of community-outreach exhibits that’s part of a personal grassroots project by Michael of Niwot. The purpose is to promote, share and celebrate openly with participating artists by extending into the Boulder Community, the daily joy of recovery and flourishing beyond addiction. At its basis is the fresh perspective of adopting healthier attitudes and practices taken toward Life – our family and community, our art and careers – a renewed purpose and sense of freedom, spirituality and acceptance of a “higher power” positively influencing our lives. "Life isn’t about finding yourself. Life is about creating yourself." More at http://www.FreshAirShows.com

As a classic basement startup, New Belgium's beginnings were entrepreneurial; it's now the third largest craft brewery and the first brewery in the United States to specialize in Belgian style beers. New Belgium is known for its commitment to environmental stewardship, and under Kim Jordan's leadership, they have developed a set of interwoven practices that include employee ownership, high involvement culture, advocacy and of course drinking beer together. In January of 2013 New Belgium announced the sale of 100 per cent of the brewery to its 475 co-workers. This enabled the formation of a family foundation with a goal of creating a new business model. Ms. Jordan and New Belgium have been widely recognized as business role models; she received the EPA's highest regional award for Environmental Excellence and in 2012 was Entrepreneur Magazine's CEO of the Year and CEO of the year by Colorado Biz Magazine. New Belgium was voted in the top ten best places to work by Outside Magazine, Men's Journal, and The Wall Street Journal...see the great event photos...

Larry and Patricia Nelson are here at the FEI Colorado special program, "Making Money as a Socially Responsible Business." We interviewed John Griffith, president of Alpine Waste & Recycling, which has built a company with consistently growing revenues and increasingly influential presence in the Denver area’s waste and recycling industries. John founded Alpine in 1999 and began signing up customers even before the company had a truck. He spent three-and-a-half months as Alpine’s sole employee and nine months as Alpine’s sole salesperson. At Alpine Waste & Recycling, he works with the company’s executive team to develop and execute corporate strategy. Griffith was a two-time finalist the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2010 and 2012; and he was a finalist for ColoradoBiz magazine’s CEO of the Year award in...

They are the best employees for this important and difficult work
1596_ 8/25/14 -
Who would have guessed that employees with autism would have a near perfect safety record or that they would be the best employees for this important and difficult work. Bill Morris made a discovery about six years ago and it's a win/win for everyone! Bill says, "Blue Star Recyclers is expanding our mission of creating local jobs for people with autism and other disabilities by opening a new facility in Denver, CO this October. Like our operations in Colorado Springs, we will provide certified electronics and bulb recycling, and hard drive shredding services for businesses and residents in the Denver area. Catching up with Nikaela
1602_ 9/2/14 -
Back in October 2012, we introduced you to Nikaela – she was asking people to “Step Out to Stop Diabetes” an annual walk/run to fund research for a cure. Nikaela is a teenager involved in her community, an excellent student, a volleyball star and a beautiful girl who bravely fights the devastating effects of diabetes that threaten her well being, every day of her life. It’s hard work for her and her family – worse it’s more than they can afford financially and at times emotionally. This year alone she’s lost two young teenage friends, because they lost their fight with diabetes. Imagine what it must be like, at such a young age, to go to sleep at night, knowing you could slip into a coma and never see the world again. Or maybe lose your vision, or face amputation. You can help....

We're talking with David Moll, venture capitalist and founder of Infield Capital. We asked David to tell us about their work. He said, "Infield Capital. is a fund that invests in early stage technologies for the transportation industry. In particular we are interested in those things that improve the economy and emissions profile for vehicles. That stuff is between the key and the wheel." So they really like things like new advanced combustion engines and new systems like air handling your fuel injection for those engines. David says they love batteries and power electronics and electric motors and they've been looking again at fuel cells - all of those technologies are within their purview. "If we get jargony," he said, "we invest in the things that store and convert energy for mobile applications." Now half-way through their fund, with 15 investments and a couple of exits, David tells us they've seen the landscape around the companies in their portfolio change dramatically. He thinks about the relatively new phenomenon of abundant, low cost natural gas, domestic natural gas. That certainly wasn't something they saw coming in 2007.

This is part 2 of Larry's interview with David Brown, President, TechStars. Larry asked, "A group, a startup, they think they should get involved with TechStars, what should they be doing?" David replied, "They should go to www.TechStars.com/apply, that is our gateway to getting into the program. There's a comprehensive questionnaire there that allows us to get to know you pretty quickly as individuals and your idea to get to market, your product and from that process we select approximately ten companies from each of the thirteen locations to go through this 3 month program that then culminates in DemoDay. When we started back in 2008 we brought in a lot of mentors to provide advice the companies. And I think one of the things we've learned over the years is there is so much more to it than that. Although it's great to provide advice and it's great to provide investors at DemoDay to fund the companies, there is a real network effect here. There are 400 companies that have graduated, 1200 founders, 1200 or so mentors in the system, investors"...listen for more ...David's latest book is 'No Vision All Drive'...

Looking for companies that can have national or worldwide reach
1593_ 8/25/14 -
Larry interviewed David Brown, President, TechStars. They have grown so much over the past seven tears and Larry was seeking an update. TechStars funds technology oriented companies, typically these are web-based or other software companies, but they’ve funded companies that don’t quite fit that mold as well. They are also looking for companies that can have national or worldwide reach. Specifically, they don’t fund biotechnology companies, restaurants, consultancies, or other local service oriented companies. "How much funding do Techstars companies receive?" You get $118,000 in seed investment upon acceptance into Techstars for 7-10% equity in your company. You also have access to great perks such as free hosting and services, sponsored meals, office space with the other teams, and more. There is immeasurable value in the connections and advice that you’ll receive when you start your company with...listen for more ...David's latest book is 'No Vision All Drive'...
