Don't get distracted by the executives or mobile devices in the room
1609_ 9/15/14 -
Mike Hess doesn't get distracted by the executives in the room or mobile devices in the room, or the pretty girls in the room - He just focuses on content. Mike, who is legally blind, is the founder and executive director of the Blind Institute of Technology. And now, he teaches his Sightless Principles of Communication to teams and companies, large and small (Google, DaVita, and Gates Rubber), about the real importance of actually listening. They've done amazing things. Year to date the Blind Institute of Technology has already placed 12 people. Mike said, "One of our latest candidates, an MBA with a vision impairment out of Fort Collins, Colorado, just got placed at DaVita (a Fortune 300 company) - and we just keep rolling Larry. It's so exciting!" Mike credits his board of directors for much of the great success. Mike and the Blind Institute of Technology (BIT) have an Easy Button for the companies looking for talented employees. RELATED LINKS:

Forbes Top 20 Universities for Entrepreneurship List... CU-Boulder
1607_ 9/15/14 -
"The Entrepreneurship Initiative is entering its seventh year - an interesting trajectory for us in terms of what we've done around entrepreneurship in particular. And, this is year 15 for Silicon Flatirons overall, and of course, Phil Weiser the Executive Director and Dean of the Law School" pointed out Brad Bernthal Clinical Professor of Law at CU Law School and the Entrepreneurship Initiative Director for Silicon Flatirons Center. Brad said they got a real shot in the arm this summer, Forbes listed the top 20 universities for entrepreneurship and CU Boulder was ranked in that top 20..."There is much discussion about, 'what would it look like for us to truly be a Top Five public university for entrepreneurship... We've done two things right, one missing. We've brought the innovation community to the campus on a regular basis. Silicon Flatirons did over 40 events last year that had an entrepreneurship orientation, over 6000 attendees - a high velocity of interaction between campus and community. Second, our students across the campus are engaged. We have the New Venture Challenge that's for anyone with a CU ID - faculty, staff, student from any discipline across campus. Anybody can get involved, we will help them build a business; we'll give them mentors who are the best and brightest in the community...

Tapping into the human resource connections in your market

Last year 100s of people attended this event and it has been sold out each of the last four years. The format is appreciated by all - there are no speakers, just a lot of time to network and make or renew your contacts. We asked Howard Potter to talk about his networking best practices. Networking should be about 'How can I help you?' You walk into a meeting, the first thing you want to think is, 'What can I do to help these people in the room?' First, try to arrive a minimum of 15 minutes early. Those first minutes are the most important. You can get the ground work going, canvass the room, get a feeling for what's going on. I would also suggest, try to leave 15 minutes late, at the end of the networking time is some of the most valuable time that you spend. After the networking session is over you have to take the cards you've collected, make notes on the cards to remind yourself later of who you met. Talking about business cards - Never, Never, Never be without your business card. Howard Potter, recovering attorney and CPA is the founder (9 years ago) of this Annual Investment & Finance Cross-Networking Event: Don't miss this one, Sept. 17, 2014. Check it out...
