Technology Executive of the Year with photos to prove it 1619_ 10/6/14 - Larry is talking with Michael Clark, CTO of Photobucket, at the gala awards presentation as he is honored as the CTP 2014 Technology Executive of the Year! From overseeing day-to-day technical operations, such as web and mobile services, as well as planning Photobucket's software development, Clark not only serves as CTO, he built the infrastructure that Photobucket's virtual world stands on. Photobucket.com is now a household name in image hosting, sharing and printing with well over 110 million registered users. As chief architect and first executive hire for the company, Clark continues to strive to not only keep the platform he built safe for users, Photobucket is considered the web's "cleanest" photo file sharing service, and is strictly monitored. With the passion of one of the best CTO's in the business, Michael Clark helps make the preservation of clients' memories his number one priority and his life's work, which is one of the many reasons for being named the 2014 Technology Executive of the Year! As you might know, w3w3.com has a strong relationship with Photobucket. Check out Photo Events pages. RELATED LINKS:

Test those ideas very rapidly, before you build anything
1621_ 10/6/14 -
Vice President of Operations at TechStars in Boulder, Daniel Feld is a natural for the organization, born and bred in an entrepreneurial family environment. Larry asked what are some of the first things one should do when building a company? Daniel replied, "I think most important for an entrepreneur is to find a problem that they are deeply passionate about solving. And, to test that idea very, very quickly to make sure it's a problem worth solving. That someone's willing to pay for the solution and that the pain is real. Sometimes, we as entrepreneurs like to make up what we believe to be a problem. And then we get so enamored with the solution that we are blinded by our own passion for it without validating that there's a real need out there. One of the things that's become a lot easier for people to do and encouraged through programs like TechStars and other methodologies, is to test those ideas very rapidly, before you build anything. So go talk to your potential customers. Find them very quickly and find out if the pain is truly shared and worth solving." RELATED LINKS: TechStars ||

Mash up of people, different viewpoints and ideas
1610_ 9/22/14 -
The ATLAS Institute at CU Boulder, over the years, has evolved and Jill Dupre, Associate Director said, "...it continues to evolve. A constant is that we are a home for 'creative trouble makers'. We're a home for intrepid inventors, people who want to change the future! ATLAS is interdisciplinary - we work with people from all over campus." ATLAS is housed within Engineering but their faculty and students come from all over, from arts, theater, English, journalism, business, engineering, computer sciences, law... At ATLAS, they like the kind of ideas that come from that intersection and that mash up of people, different viewpoints and ideas. ATLAS Institute's belief is that combining that mix in a creative way and in a fun environment is how you change your world and how you make it better. Of course, it's not all fun and games. ATLAS has three core academic programs. At the undergrad level; technology, arts and media - that promotes creative work and research and information technology and digital media in an interdisciplinary environment.

The biggest challenge to an entrepreneur today
1610_ 9/22/14 -
What is the biggest challenge to an entrepreneur today? Larry asked our expert Brad Bernthal, Director of the Entrepreneurial Initiative, Silicon Flatiron Center and Clinical Law Professor, CU Boulder - Law School. His reply... "The biggest challenge I'm seeing today, is often competing with the noise. So, in broad strokes, the democratization of entrepreneurship in just the last ten years has been amazing. The fact that, especially in Information Technology, startup costs have dropped so dramatically, has leveled the playing field. That's a great thing in terms of giving innovation opportunities to a wider group of entrepreneurs. But, I think it also introduces a lot of noise into the system. In terms of competition for angel funding, but especially venture capital funding and most importantly market share. Getting attention, showing traction, it's always been a challenge, but I think it may be even more challenging today." And, we couldn't be more proud and humbled to hear Brad as he gives a shout-out to w3w3.com "If you look back over the 15 years of Silicon Flatirons, nobody has been more present at events and getting the word out and doing the kind of community building that you do Larry, than w3w3 - So thanks for all you've done to build the entrepreneurship scene!" ...There's more...

Talking about having a global presence 1620_ 10/6/14 - We're speaking with the 'master of deception', that is in terms of finding those creatively hidden beds in some very cleverly designed, hand-built furniture, to achieve a dual purpose room. Located in Denver, FlyingBeds International, Inc. and Ron McKey, president/founder, are very well known locally and internationally. We're talking about having a global presence, and Ron tells us how it begins with the presentation of your best. In this case, at the show. That would be the Hospitality/Design Expo in Las Vegas this past May - with 900 exhibitors. It was a very good show for Ron because he was able to demonstrate to the hotel trade that you can lift a king-size bed with one hand. They were pretty impressed - it was a giant mattress in a very nice unit that he'd done for the Marriott Corporation. Right now in their factory Ron has two queens in a rustic cherry that are going to Bermuda with a very unusual finish to it. He's actually got a great amount of crazy stuff going through right now, including a bed from a New York designer that has antique books that came from London. It is actually books and a television put together... but you'll just have to look at the website where hundreds of amazing examples are displayed... RELATED LINKS:

A Story that continues to inspire and impress... 1616_ 9/29/14 - It is always such a pleasant surprise to find and learn about the true heroes living amongst us. So often they are quietly leading their lives with never a word of what they've accomplished and often continuing to give us more. We think it's part of the fabric of what makes them the heroes they are. The Community Reach Channel, sponsored by CIMCO (Capital Investment Management Company) and our friend Chris Pelley, proudly introduce us to Bud Ahearn. Bud spent thirty-four years in the United States Air Force where he retired as a Two-Star General, building and managing Air Force bases around the world, and then 20 years with CH2M Hill and over 10 years with Engineers Without Borders. Chris said, "Bud has been a role model and a guiding light in the field of social enterprise, where business people and corporations can find alignment and purpose." After graduating from engineering school in 1958, Bud joined the Air Force, stationed at Camp Cook Air Force Base, now known as Vandenberg Air Force Base. Bud said when he arrived it was a couple of posts and a rusty chain. It was chosen to be a space base where their mission in life was to seize and maintain control of space. This first assignment was awesome and filled with heroic aspiration, "...and our nation fulfilled that." This was the beginning of Bud Ahearn's career. As awe inspiring as that is, his story continues - a story that touches the world and continues to inspire and impress. Learn more about our local hero, General Joseph A 'Bud' Ahearn.
